I'm thinking about using my Cabela's Bucks to get a Forster CO-AX press; one of the main reasons is its spring-loaded universal shell plate. I'm always messing around with weird brass and have dies that are close enough but no shellholder.
Will the CO-AX handle cases with thin rims and no extractor grooves? Specifically Nagant Revolver brass, but I also have some .45 Colt brass like that.

I saw a used Bonanza CO-AX press on eBay that was converted to use snap-in shellholders. Could that be converted back to the spring-loaded plate?

Yep "S" jaws (P/NOO1231) on the small side supplied with the press will do 9mm Luger which uses the same shell holders as your Nagant. No need to buy the "LS" jaws unless you want to load rifle cartridges from 218 Bee to 458 Win.Mag.
Sorry don't know about the reconversion.

Are you sure? The Nagant Revolver brass I have (Fiocchi) will not fit a 9mm or a .223 shellholder; I think because there's no extractor groove. (I'll try 9mm again when I get home just to make sure.) Thanks.

Are you talking about the 7.62 Tokarev pistol round or the 7.62 x 54R rifle round?

O.K 7.62 x 38R (google is fun) uses the same shell holder as 218 Bee so you'll need the large side of the of the standard shell holder jaws.I believe the Co-Ax system will work better for you as that thin rim will be entirely supported instead of about 3/4 supported as by a shell holder.

7.62x38R. Sorry, I thought "Nagant Revolver" was the common name for it (it's a long, funny-looking beast.) I'm going to try reloading it using .30 Carbine dies, although getting the crimp right will be tricky -- hopefully the crimp profile is not critical.

If the case has a rim or an extractor groove, it will work in the Co-Ax. If you want to be sure, call them up. Their quite nice to talk to.

If you have the parts, yes. Just a matter of removing two screws and putting the original spring loaded assembly in its place. If you don't have the parts, Forster will sell them to you but it will probably cost soewhere around $50 for the base pieces (2), the shell holder jaws, and two little springs.

The co-ax is great at getting stuck cases out of dies where conventional presses would rip the rim off. Since conventional shell holders must be loose enough to allow you to slide the case in, they do not grip the case as close to the bottom of the extractor groove (or case body for rimmed cases with no extractor groove) as the spring loaded jaws on the co-ax do.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna call the local Cabela's stores tomorrow (not really local, one is 40 miles and one is 90 miles away) and see if either can get one in stock by the end of the month so I can buy it in-store and activate a Cash Card promotion they sent me in the mail. And if not, I'll order one from their catalog.
