Just asking............. :D

For those of you who do not own one, what are your thoughts on getting one?

Just a little push here maybe to help make up your mind....... ;)

This knife is sold.

Here is the last one done, thought you would like to see it.

Folder - #572
Amber Sambar Stag
ATS34 - Steel
Closed - 3 5/8''

I put a 400 belt finish on this blade.
The stag is a bit more red in person. - :)
All comments are welcomed.
Thanks for looking, take care.

If I could afford that hunter with D2 you posted earlier, it would be mine. My guess is that price can be a huge factor when buying knives. That said, I do have a folder and a fixed by Canal Street. Not custom, but they do have nice D2 blades and giraffe bone scales. And, they work hard.

That looks like nice work, but my custom folders have been Buck 110s from their 'Custom Shop'. My slippie interests are filled by Boker Tree Brand classics. While I have a few John Greco's and a Fred Vollmer fixed blade 'custom', I prefer Bark River K&T semi-production fb's. Such things as repeatability, dependability, and consistent heat treating are not factors with them, either. I have seen some variability from examples on many custom maker's tables at shows - and that doesn't instill confidence. Word of mouth - a happy/content following help, I suppose. Me, I'm mostly a 'buy it off the rack' guy!

I hope to own a custom knife one day. One made by someone other than me and my primitive forgings....

It probably won't be a slippy, though. More likely a fixed blade of some sort that happens to speak to me when I see it....

Gonna be a while, though.... A custom knife sits squarely in the "want" category..... And the needs pile is still deep.

You do make beautiful knives. I'm awed by the close fit of the blade to bolster and spring when the blade is open. That one detail speaks volumes to me.

Bought a Lone Wolf for the wife, and he had some he made out of a Harley chain that are on the way.

Maybe a Slippie soon, too busy loving the Damascus right now.

Made by Unger out of ball bearing Damascus, he calls it a butter knife.

I am resisting the urge as best that I can, but being a realist, I know that resistance is futile.

I already have.

I had a collection of customs many years ago. Some Randall's, a few Don Hastings, George Stone, some others. I don't know why, but I got tired of them. Boxed them up and shipped them all down to A.G.Russell to be sold of in his knife lists that he had at the time. I went to using just factory stuff that I could replace at any sports store. Sak's, Case pocket knives. A Buck here and there.

I don't know if I would ever buy another custom, but if I did it would have to be a folder. Kind of a personal piece of pocket jewelery that I could really use for something. I'm at a stage of my life that I don't want to own anythng that I don't really have a use for, and I have little use for sheath knives. For the ocasional fish and game I use my old Buck 102 woodsman. For camp use I use a 12 inch Ontario machete. All else my pocket knife of the day handles. So maybe I'd buy a really nice pocket knife for that final 'use till I drop' thing.

Maybe.

I doubt that I ever will frankly...unless I find that mythical $20 Randall at a yard sale or something. They are fabulous works of art but I would rather buy more really cool, less expensive knives, ammo, and a nice new pair of boots every couple of years.

And, also, that multi hundred dollar custom is no less likely to slip out of the sheath or pocket and into Davey Jones' locker than a $12 Mora or a $40 Gerber.

I have also bought/ordered a few customs ------- a Butch Valloton {sp?} d.a. auto , Ralph Turnbull custom Bali-song , Bone 8" fighter , and a few others.

As to paying $300/$600 for a "everyday" pocket knife --- just not my cup of tea.

If I could Mr Davison I would :fire:. Till then I'll stick to my old slipjoints(They were mostly assembled by hand) and my custom fixed blades. Much less expensive than custom folders.

Only if I can custom order it some day. Right now I do good to drop 100 dollars on one.

You do make some really fine looking knives but with a daughter in JR high your fine stuff is way out of my price range.

Another one?

I had made this knife a linerless folder with some green G10. Well it had some small like stress cracks around the shield when done.
So I remade it today into this........... :)

Folder - #573

Closed - 3 3/8''

Thanks for the looks and replies.

Yeah, they look great but my more expensive and extravagant wants are on hold for a while until I get more cashflow.

For me, a purchased custom knife is an extravagance. I recognize their value and that's why I'm edging into making my own. I like useful art and like making stuff.
