Will you guys stop hoarding Garands?!?

Around 1991 I went to a garage sale in Sunnyvale, CA, and there was some kind of military rifle, selling for like $20 or something. An old lady was selling stuff, probably belonged to her husband or father, I don't know.

I knew nothing about firearms at the time, who knows, it could have been worth something. Just a counter-example to the guy who said they had never seen a firearm at a garage sale.

Things have probably changed a lot in just the last few years though..

Are you suggesting FA sales be restricted? If you want to buy a Garand (I highly recommend you do) the present order-to-receive time is only about 3-4weeks for a FG or RG. Why not just order one now instead of insulting the members of this forum with your abusive and uncalled for posting. If the $$ is the reason for your delay in ordering, please be informed that CMP will gladly accept a major CC with the order. That way, you can spend the near future making payments on the M1, instead of writing inflamatory comments about the members of THR. I, of course, cannot speak for all the members, but for my own 2 cents.... I will defend your right to own a FA. BUT I DO NOT OWE YOU A FA. If others are interested in collecting such a piece of American history, and make financial sacrifices to do so, I can only commend them. I myself only own 1 Garand, but plan on ordering a second one soon. My original wish/order was for a SG, but they were unavailable at the time so I ordered FG (arrived in not the greatest condition) but absolutly enjoyed the process of restoring my now beloved M1. But never did I rankle, flame, insult others for my delaying the purchase of an available American historical icon such as the Garand. I see that you are a new member to this forum. THR is a little different from some of the other FA/2A forums on the net. It stands for 2A/FA Rights as do the others, but also stands for more than that alone. I respectfully suggest you study both.

I am just a little frustrated that CMP is running out of Service Grades THE VERY WEEK I SEND IN MY VERY FIRST ORDER, and other guys post pics of huge Garand collections.

Of COURSE it is better that collectors own them than the .GOV does! That way, some day you'll croak and your ungrateful kids will sell them for pennies on the dollar at an estate sale!

I bought a CMP papered M1..but not from CMP but on a gun auction, payed a bit, but it's only money..:D ...so don't fret, there are plenty of M1s around for those who like them...mine is a collector-grade in unissued condition...hee, hee ,hee...but how long will it stay unissued...:D

Blood Donor, I saw the humor! I do wish every one who wanted a CMP Service Grade could own one. A great rifle and I enjoy every one I hold. However, I am guilty as charged (shall we say, I own one too many??!!).

You all can fight over those rifles for all I care. Just stay away from the revolvers and early semi autos. I have enough competition for these weapons. Now where is that perfect C96 Broomhandle I've been looking for.

I stopped buying Garands. I can stack arms and I'm happy about that.

Speaking of estate sales, I used to work with an old guy that was the KING of estate sales. He'd come in to work on Friday with all the "Thrifty Nickel" and newspaper listings of sales, map them out in a spiraling pattern from his house, and hit them sequentially, starting at 6 AM. The "stuff" this guy picked up was amazing.

His most impressive story though (which I still somehow doubt, regardless of the fact that the man never lied in his life, as far as I know), was a sale in Pasadena, California in the mid-1980s. He happened to be in town on a two week business trip, and since he had nothing to do over that weekend, he stopped in to this sale.

The company that handled the old feller's estate sale apparently wasn't real well versed in firearms laws, and in addition to the large collection of 1903s, Garands, Mausers, and Arisakas, there were two 1928 style Thompsons and a .30 caliber Browning machine gun! :what:

I've never forgiven him for not paying the $400, and getting BOTH Thompsons.

I want to help clear something up for the running out of Service Grades, For the last month or so they have had service grades for sale BUT right next to it it said you have to wait 90-120 days to get yours. They dont even have the ones they were selling. They are going through the last batch someone said its 50,000. And there finding the service grade out of the field and rack grades and testing them. It takes time. I bet once they fill all the orders they have for the service grades, they will put them back up for sale.

I ordered 3 at the same time, one field grade and two service, i got my field in about a week, but i have to wait 90-120 days for the service grade, becuase they have not found/tested them yet.

Don't feel bad. When I sent my order in a few years ago, they had just run out of Danish M1s with VAR barrels, had run out of International Harvester M1s, and were getting low on HRA M1's, I was lucky to get a HRA. I now wish that I had ordered a few more, not to sell, but to give to my kids when they grow up.

I'm with BD on this one. The old coots who own 6 dozen MI's were buying them for $3 a dozen 40 years ago.Now only the crapy ones that look like they've been run over by a 120 boxcar train, with parts from 528 different manufacturers and countries are left. And those are going for a "very reasonable" $900. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

If it's an "insane" price, it won't sell, and the dealer will be sitting on unsold stock for a long time.

Are you saying the guy that traded a Ferrari for a tickle-me-elmo was perfectly sane? If the answer is yes, then I think we have a real problem here.
