Will you hunt wolves?

St. Johns, mountain lions and coyotes just LOVE goats.

You can have a wonderful game of Let's Pretend: Tie a goat and when he gets into his Meh-eh-eh-eh routine, you can imagine you're Jim Corbett in a machan, awaiting the arrival of Tigger. (Okay, so I'm mixing Maneaters of Kumaon with Winnie The Pooh. So what? It's my imagination and I'm sticking to it.)

Actually, I like goats. Young ones. Barbecued.

A young goat is a fine meal!

Had it for the first time in 1968 in Villa Acuna at Ma Crosby's. I was fifteen, and Dad and Capt. Jack ordered quail and beer. I ordered cabrito and Coca Cola.

I don't shoot predators without provocation. Dogs, cats, wolves, leopards, lions and tigers and bears oh my, ain't on my menu.

Given a reason, I'll whack one. I own no livestock, but I do have a deer lease. I guess if I saw a wolf chasing a 20" buck, I'd try to get 'em both.

I'm going fishing in Alaska next year, and I'll have an old Winchester Model 12 with a 20 inch barrel slung over my shoulder while I cast along the river. It will be full of Brenneke slugs, and I will be full of hope that all the bears I see will be tolerant.

Now, make no mistake, I don't hold out my personal choices as the best course for Modern Man. If you want to shoot a wolf, go ahead. I just don't care nothin for it. :)

Sick? Why?

A buddy of mine was care-taking on the Rosillos Mountains Ranch, just north of Big Bend National Park. He shot a young male that dressed out about 60 pounds. He barbecued it and brought it along to a gathering at Study Butte, where we also had deer meat and brisket. (Sausage and chicken, too, IIRC.)

Anyhow, the lion meat got all eaten up before we ran out of other stuff...

Some folks would come up and say, "Lion? I don't really know if I could eat THAT!" "Well, try a little taste..." (Taste) "Wow! That's GOOD!"

Just saw this thread, and I've been reading some news clips lately about the wolves.

In the past my family has had livestock, cattle and goats mostly. Where we lived there were no wolves, but lots of coyotes. I don't mind having 'yotes around at all, unless I catch one messin' with my animals. Especially a newborn calf. I figure wolves are the same.

If I were in one of the areas where the wolves have been re-introduced, and I had livestock, there are certain steps I'd take depending on the situation.

If I saw a wolf anywhere near my herd during calving time I'd drop it in a heartbeat. If I was out with my dog, anywhere, and a wolf or wolves were threatening it, I'd shoot to kill. And then I'd leave that wolf right there for the others to see.

Now if I only had mature cattle and no smaller animals like goats, I would probably fire some shots right in front of it to give it a message. The only problem there is they don't seem to get the message. At least not 'yotes. They just keep coming back. I imagine wolves might be even bolder.

I'm no expert on the subject by any means. These are just my thoughts on the subject. But I would definitely do whatever is neccessary to protect my animals.

One more thing. Even though I don't mind having the 'yotes around, they're one of my favorite critters to hunt.
