For the last ten years I have been reading articles about Scattergun Technologies/ Wilson Combat. They have a program to rebuild old 12 ga Rem 870 to modern tactical specs & reliability. My project started off as a police trade in 1978 built Remington 870 Wingmaster 20” smooth bore rifle sights that had the blueing worn off on 30% of the barrel & receiver. What I got back was a tuned 870 Police with an OD green Armor Tuff finish. I also sent a 28” hunting barrel that they also refinished for only $40. Their workmanship & customer service was second to none. I know most of Wilson Combat AR & pistols start at $1200 & quickly go up. I provided the 870 & extra barrel but the entire package was only $570. It is a steal & a keeper. These picture will not do it Justice but here you go:

Maybe a pic of the shotgun before and after? $570 sounds pretty steep to me but I'm considering what it costs to pop on a mag extension, add a few enhanced power springs, etc.... I guess it's not too out of line though since they refinished the gun and probably slicked up the action, etc.... skilled labor ain't cheap though I suppose. Did you get a tritium front sight included with that or is it the factory remington rifle sights?

I think the prices were fair for what they did & the expertise. The packages start at $230 if you just want it reworked then parkized only.

Here is what they did:
Bored the barrel to accept 3” shells
Add a 2 shot extension
Installed customer provided Meprolight tritium front rifle sight
Rebuilt the trigger group, new jumbo safety
New magazine tube spring & follower
Parkized then refinished with Armor Tuff receiver & both barrels

Good deal. I bet it feels excellent. Hickok 45 has sang high praise of his WC/ST 870. I would honestly love to handle and shoot a gun worked on by Wilson/Scattergun or Vang. I've considered sending my barrel to Vang Comp to have the wireEDM compensation holes installed but it's something of a risk to pay the $$$ and be satisfied or possibly disappointed with the result..... Sounds like you got your money's worth and I'd be interested to feel the action of a gun worked over by either of those reputable gunsmiths. I can't imagine a better feeling 870 action than my Wingmaster TB but from what some have stated they can improve upon the Wingmaster action and make it even more buttery.

My Wingmaster and Express feel like they are almost two different guns. The wingmaster will practically cycle itself and the Express is certainly functional but a world apart from the Wingmaster. I would love to send my Express for the spa treatment but I think I might be better served to find another older Remington Wingmaster or 870P.

I've heard that some of these gunsmiths use an abrasive/liquid oil mixture and cycle the action a few hundred times to slick things up, I'd love to know what they use.......

These older Remington’s are MUCH, MUCH better than any of the Freedom Group Remington’s of recent years and by all accounts better still than rhe new “Rem Arms” junk.

I love that you used a 20" smooth bore rifle sighted barrel and had the extra hunting barrel finished to match to the receiver. I cannot see an OD green finish from the pics provided but the finish looks to be very well done.

I too would love to see a before and after comparison if you have it. Enjoy your new project!
