I recently bought a win 94 30-30 and have noticed that the lever does not have to be back to the stock and depressing the trigger stop to fire. It will fire even without the trigger stop being depressed.

Is this an easy fix? Expensive? Obviously I will not try to shoot this gun until it is repaired, I was just wondering about it.

Anyone have a gunsmith name in Oklahoma City?

The plunger the safety lever presses up into the tang should be spring loaded down.

Point the rifle up, then just crack open the lever without opening the action, and press on the plunger with your finger.
The trigger should move back and forth slightly.

If it doesn't, I would take the stock off and see if the safety lever spring is there and still intact. You just need to remove the big tang screw at the top rear of the tang with a properly fitted screwdriver.

Once you have it out, wiggle the stock off, and take a gander in there and see what's going on.

thanks, I tried pressing on it and the trigger did not wiggle at all! I am not sure I feel like I am qualified to remove the stock. Is it something I can do without permantly damaging anything? Can I fix it if I do or will it still need a gunsmith?

Thanks so much for your help.

I see no reason you could not remove the stock and take a look. Use a good hollow ground screwdriver so you don't bugger up the screw heads.

The little tab that sticks down is part of a larger part called the trigger stop. It is spring loaded to come down and block the trigger until the lever is fully closed, thus making sure the bolt is closed before the hammer can fall. There may be a burr on the parts or maybe just dirt. I think you can correct either condition without the need of a gunsmith.

Mr Keenan,

I have the stock off but an not sure what I am looking for. Would you be able to walk me through?

Look under the flat mainspring, and see if there is a silver colored wire spring that looks sort of like a bent paper-clip pressing down on the trigger stop / safety lever?

If it is broken, or not even there, the trigger stop will not work, except by gravity.

It is also possible the screw that holds the spring in place has been loosened enough for the spring to have slipped off the lever.

In that case, it could be rubbing on the side of the lever and binding it up.

I took the stock off and saw no spring/paper clip under the safety piece. I think it must be missing.

rcmodel - mine does not look exactly like yours does but I did not have any spring raising up the safety piece. I guess I will take it to my local gunsmith. Thanks for all the help. Think I can replace the spring myself?

but I did not have any spring raising up the safety piece.
Down. It pushes it down!

Mine is a pre-64 made in 1954.

I don't know what yours is, because we never got to that point, but it must be a post-64, which is similar, but slightly different.
It should still at least have a spring in it that you can see with the stock off.

Regardless, a gunsmith is probably your best course of action, for sure.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
