Either should work, depending on the place where used. Although my cjoices are M70 or M336:rolleyes:

I have been taking both. I hunt alternatively from two stands; one with shots around 100 yds, and a tower chair w/ 150-200+. The shorter-shot ground stand is more for hogs, the tower chair more for whitetail. .270 Model 70 in the chair; .30-30 94 in the ground blind.

Lets not get technical. Obiously you can think of different applications, yardages, terrains etc. If you had to choose between one or the other what would you take?

My eyes like optics...so Marlin makes my levers. The '94 is a fine rifle, but I have to go with the M-70.

:)

It's like saying hip waders or tennis shoes, which do you take?

Well, it depends on whether I'm going duck hunting or jogging.

I have a few M70s but don't have a 94 yet, so I'll take a nice pre-64 rifle with octagon barrel and receiver sight in 38-55 please.

I only have one deer rifle right now & it is a model 70. If I could have only one I would pick it because the calibers available are better long range.

I chose the M70 because it can do short range while the 94 doesnt do long range very well.

If I could only have one it would be a nice bolt gun.

This does apply for hunting
Hunting what? And hunting where?

As others have said, the 94 30-30 is a short range, medium power, fast handling, open sighted carbine for deer hunting in the woods.

A Model 70 scoped rifle can be anything from a 500 yard varmint rifle in .220 Swift, to a 400 yard antelope rifle in .270 or .264 Mag, to an elephant rifle in .458 Win Mag.

It all depends on where and what you plan to hunt in choosing one over the other.
And you didn't say.

rcmodel took the words right out of my mouth! To answer your nebulous question accurately, we would need to know the game you're after and/or the caliber desired, the terrain, your experience, etc., etc.

Out of curiosity, blackops, why did you, yourself, vote for the Win Model 70?

Like I have already explained, you can think of a hundred different scenarios. I'm still trying to figure out why people turn a simple question into a technical one. Most everybody gives a simple answer and explanation yet few feel compelled to make it more technical. If you have to pick one or the other no matter what you are hunting, where you are hunting, what the weather is, what the altitude is, what the temperature is, what the wind drift is, in the brush, in the canyons, in the meadows, in the morning, in the evening etc. All around which is the better rifle in your opinion? Simple!!

Because I have a pre-64 and IMO the m70 is the best hunting rifle ever made. The thing has dang near target rifle accuracy and as reliable as they come.

...why people turn a simple question...

That's the rub, your question is actually riddled with complexity.
For my personal purposes, I'd take the lever gun because I'm covered well in boltys. You see there... I just had to add the intricacies that explain my answer. Dang those technicalities!!!:banghead:

Well, it depends on whether I'm going duck hunting or jogging.

C'mon, everyone knows it's levers for ducks and bolts for running!:D

I think more like asking; which is better, a wrench or a screwdriver? Different tools for different jobs.

A M70 is a great rifle, no doubt! Great for more open hunting, hunting from a treestand, hunting over longer distances. The M70 does not make as good of a woods rifle, quick handling rifle, easy carrying rifle as the M94. A M70 does not shoulder and point as naturally as an M94. The Winchester '94 is an ergonomic masterpiece, beautifully balanced, quick handling, light and portable. Perfect for woods and brush hunting at 100 yards or less, which is the kind of deer hunting the majority of deer hunting is, especially east of the Mississippi!

M70. Think of it this way, if you had a standard setup on both - iron sights on the 94 and a 3-9 variable on the m70- the m70 covers more situations, since the OP says this choice is not based on a particular scenario. Think of it like this, if you were in the opposite situation the gun was designed for, which would you be better off with? I'd rather have the m70 shooting at a deer at 30 yards in the woods than an m94 and have to shoot at 400+.

I think that the 94 is overall a better deer rifle than the 70 especially now that I can load up the 30-30 with the 160 gr Hornady FTX bullets. With a Williams peep sight on the back, it is a solid 300 yd deer rifle.

Here's a hint: if no one answers the question the way you wanted them to, you asked it wrong in the first place.

All around which is the better rifle in your opinion? Simple!!

You didn't say that the first time.
