I understand Winchester has contracted Hodgdon to make their powders and that HP-38 is the same as Win231 (data on both manufacturer's site matches up). I recently borrowed a Speer #11 (1992) and Nosler #3 (1989) from a friend and their specs are significantly hotter than that in my Lee manual or from either powder manufacturer.

When was Hodgdon contracted by Winchester? Did a change to the 231 powder occur at that point? Or is this simply a case of manuals getting more conservative in recent times?

Speer shows a starting point of 5.6 and a Max of 6.2 using a 230 gr FMJ .45ACP. The Nosler manual lists a starting point of 4.8 and a max of 5.8 grans for 230 grain FMJ. Comparitively Winchester/Hodgdon list a start of 4.2 and max of 5.2 for use with a 230 gr. FMJ.

Sorry for the newbie questions, but I'm just getting started reloading and purchased 4lbs of 231. Thanks!

I will give you my opinion but it is not a technical answer. I have been reloading for many years and have a large collection of reloading manuals put out by Speer, Lyman, Nosler etc and I agree loads have gotten lighter and "more lawyer proofed" over the years. My advice to you is stay with the loads listed in your newest manual and be safe. Hodgeon has safely tested all loads listed to keep you and everyone on the firing line safe. Good Shooting!

I have been useing 5 grains of 231 under a 230 LSWC for my government model and was very plesantly suprised at both the accuracy and med recoil. So far I haven't had a single problem and the load is far from punishing. I've tried 231 for everything I load at one time or another (my brother gave me a 8lb can for my birthday) and by far this is the most accurate and consistant load yet.
