Hey... any 1300 Defender fans here? I've been a Mossberg guy for many years, but recently discovered this superb pump gun line. Tough to get noticed with all the 500/590/870 hoopla, which makes this a sleeper pumpgun. I'd heard a little about them for awhile, but it took some time for them to move up higher in my radar. Lee Lapin's excellent review on his FN Tactical Police Shotgun (TPS) was instrumental in moving me toward the 1300. They offer some unique features that are sweet indeed. Now that I have one, all I can say is wow... this is a great shotgun indeed!

This gun is a little beefier than you might expect - because they are based on a semi-auto shotgun design, they are slightly overbuilt for a pump gun. The action is very smooth and quick. It offers an 8-shot capacity in an 18" pump gun (rare!). The mag tube is a solid, one-piece tube (no extensions to tack on). Available with deep high polished bluing and a beautiful hardwood stock set. The pump action is inertia-based, so the moment you fire a round, the gun begins the cycling stroke for you. This sample was very clean with very little apparent use. Picked her up for a little over $300. Prices are low on these because these are not on very many shotgun buyer's radar.

The only mod I plan for this 8-shot 18" beauty is to refinish the furniture with an oil finish. The factory finish is beautiful, but just a bit sleek and slippery for my liking. And I'm betting once the factory finish gets stripped away and a rich oil finish gets into the wood... there will be some really nice character to discover in the wood.

Just thought I'd share this... to anyone who doesn't know much about the Defender... check 'em out! The doo-dad accessory aftermarket isn't quite as vast as it is for the ubiquitous 500/590/870, but if you're like me, you don't need nor want a lot of doo-dads hanging all over your pump gun. If you like them clean and simple, you'll want for nothing with this gun. Of course you can get a variety of stocks, grips, lights, rails, etc. to fit if you really want them. The FN Tactical Police Shotgun (TPS) is virtually a re-badged Winchester 1300 with some different features and finishes, so pretty much anything for the FN TPS works with the 1300 as well.

I got Mine last summer for about 250. It was used, but everything still looked good and clean No wear marks or anything. The owner bought it in 2005. He said he took it out once to try it out and kept it locked after that for 5 years.

Looks just like that but synthetic stock. Compare to my buddy 870, I like my Defender better. The action is so much smoother.

Whatthepho.... nice find you got and a good price! And I agree on the action... smoooooth!

=========

There are a number of variation models in the 1300 line, turkey guns, matte finishes, synthetic stocks, longer barrels, and a pistol grip only option. I also bought this gun

which was still a NIB model. But I'm not a fan of this factory pistol grip. I am swapping it out for a Speedfeed Birdshead grip, which is shaped just like the neck on a traditional full stock. The birdshead provides a much more comfortable wrist angle for shooting.

I have a birds head grip that I want to get rid of, Only downside is It didn't come with the correct hardware, The bolt it gave me was a coarse thread bolt, I am looking for the Pistol Grip like the first picture above. actually I think my Winchester might be older. I saw on an Archive that someone bought their defender in 05 with a serial number of L35xxxxx Mine is L32xxxxx

Drat!!! My secret weapon exposed.I purchased mine last year for $250 as well. After looking at Mossbergs, Benellis and Remingtons. My choice was made due to it being one of the models discontinued, when the plant shut down.

I've got the close relative in the 1200 Police with an 18" barrel... and a matte stainless finish. Smooth bore and flip up rifle sight. Mine came with a nice set of wood furniture... and resides in the basement. I had pistol grips fore/aft for years on it. Now, it's got a Knoxx SpecOps stock on it.

I likes my Winchester... that longer tube on the Defender would definately be nice though. They're good shooters too... set up a yellow pages phone book, flipped up the rifle sight, loaded a pair of 3" slugs into its belly and burried 'em both in the phone book from 100yds (standing/off-hand), not bad for a smooth bore 18".

A 1200, which is essentially the same shotgun, was my first shotgun...about 40 years ago...welcome to the club, mon frere! ;) They're very stable, well-designed shotguns. You will enjoy it, I think.

RatDog68.... nice stainless Winchester! I likes it!

killchain... perhaps if you're lucky your wife will buy one for you! ;)

JNewell... thanks for the welcome... I'm thrilled to be part of this club! I love the beefiness of this shotgun... every thing about it is beefier/heavier grade than my Mossbergs, which I have and still do love.

I'll post some pics of the matte PGO gun when I get a chance.

DHart... I wish mine had the 8shot capacity of your Defender... that's a gorgeous shotgun. BTW... I hear rumor that the stocks are interchangable between these and the 1500 autoloaders... although, I think that's for the rear stock only... the fore stock on the 1500 XTR is a fair bit bigger.

DHart, "beefy" - interesting. (Honestly.) I admit I never thought my 1200 was any beefier than the 500s. Maybe a tad more polished? I always admired (a little bit) the rotating bolt. I recently began fiddling around with a Benelli Nova, which is similar in some ways (such as rotating bolt, albeit with only two lugs) and the self-unlock. But I don't want to hijack this thread.

The nice thing about the standard magazine tube configuration is you can find all kinds of other barrels, if you want to shoot slugs or trap or quail or ducks or whatever, and many were factory threaded for Winchoke tubes, which is the same thing as the standard Invector.

JNewell... the beefiness is quite apparent in the thickness of the barrel and of the magazine tube... definitely heavier gauge than the 500 or the 590. I think the receiver is a tad beefier as well.

Interestingly, the 18" Defender is heavier (though just a bit) than my 20" 590! The hardwood stocks, thicker barrel, heavier mag tube, and possibly the receiver make the shorter 1300 just as heavy as the longer 590.

It makes me mad that i did not buy one of these guns when they were selling for $309 NIB about 5+ years ago. Now, you cant find them. I always just said to myself.. they will always be available. Oh well.

Got one a while ago. Mint condition with two barrels and a hard case for 100 UK Pounds, about 160 US Dollars. Very pleased, my local Gunshop owner let me have it for what he paid for it.

Thanks for the excellent photos DHART.:)

Interesting. I never compared them when I owned Mossbergs. You know that "beefier" and "aluminum" do not fit easily together in the same sentence??? ;)

Oh yeah.... I just meant beefier as in a little thicker material that's all... I guess I'm going to have to strip my 500 and my 1300 down to bare aluminum receivers and weigh them on my digital scale to really have some objective, quantifiable data to deal with. I will do that one of these days... I'm curious enough to do so! Might even get out the digital calipers to gauge some thicknesses. Honestly, at casual observation, the Winchester 1300 is very obviously heavier built than the 500/590.

My matte finish PGO 1300 came in today and it's magnificent... pristine NIB! I'm stoked! I put the Speedfeed Birdshead PG on it immediately and I'm loving it. Tomorrow I will step out back and put several mag fulls through it just to check it out! What a nice, compact form factor this 18" 8-shot PGO gun can claim!

Here's the "compact" version.

18" barrel. 8-shot capacity. Fast inertia-based action. Compact and controllable form factor.

Just need a sling and a TLR-1. Nothing else! Awesome close-quarters carry weapon. ;)

1300 Defender

I have a 1300 Defender identical to the first one pictured here, stock wooden furnishings straight from the factory. I LOVE this SG!
Yes I own a Mossy 500, yes I've used 870... Yes I have a Model 12

But the action, swing, feel and everything else about this fine SG is the best feeling SG to me.

I also LOVE my Ithiaca 37 but it too is no 6 shot Defender.

augustino... wonderful. I can very much relate to your enthusiasm... these guns are phenomenal. Did you mean to say "8 shot" in your last sentence? Or do you have the 6 shot? The 6 shot would be nice to have also as they feel lighter on the far end and swing a little better. That's how I feel about my 6-shot 500. Either way, awesome guns. I've been thinking about getting a 12, so it's interesting to hear that you prefer your 1300.

I put the PGO 1300 through some paces this afternoon. Shooting several mag tubes full of 00 Buck full power and some of 00 Buck reduced recoil, and some low base target loads. The reduced recoil 00 Buck is quite manageable and not uncomfortable with the birdshead grip. The full power buck is less comfortable. The low recoil Federal Tactical load feels great and is what I have the gun loaded with for HD. I also keep one or two full-stock pumps loaded and at hand as well. We live on acreage and like having a variety of loaded shotguns around just for stuff.
