;Well, one of my grail rifles arrived today. A well used and abused 1906 Winchester slide action .22 rifle. S, L, LR. My winter project.
Mechanically sound but poor cosmetically. Wood is particularly poor, but I had planned to replace the gum wood with walnut as I resurrected it.
The bore is shiny and bright, at least the part that is not ringed. It appears that at least two or more bore obstructions were about 2" forward of the chamber.
Since a new barrel is unavailable, installing a barrel liner is in order. Something I was prepared to do when I purchased the rifle, assuming that about 100 years of abuse would have worn or rotted or ringed the bore out.
I want to find its year of manufacture, Serial # is: 5886XX and on the bottom forward part of the receiver beneath the serial # is a capitol B.
Any information the mavens of Winchester have to offer will be welcome and appreciated.

Only one photo today because is so - - - - - - - - disheveled

I resurrected one for a friend. Fairly simple and easy to work on. My buddy didn't want to put any real money in it for new wood, and I couldn't get the gumwood to take any oil or stain, so I ended up doing a polyurethane finish which worked well enough. The bore was a sewer-pipe, but a bit of rifling emerged after treatment with Naval Jelly. Had to square the locking lug edges as they were rounded off enough that the breach would jump out of battery when shooting.
Turned out ok, all things considered-

Sorry, Jeff can't help with dating, but they are fun little guns that are worth some effort. 👍

Using this website and just throwing in a couple of numbers for the last two digits it gave me 1919 as a manufacture date.

Curiosity got the best of me so I looked mine up also. It was made in 1909 with a s/n of 1365xx

Film495, I sure hope so I have fond memories of shooting these rifles as a boy at carnivals. That was a LONG time ago, o_O
Looking forward to bringing the fun back into shooting after a loooong time as a competitor.
