Hello,
I need help debating the morality of adding another shotgun to the stable. Would you buy a Winchester 24 sxs in 12 gauge for 225$. It's barrels were cut down to 18 1/4 inches. What are your thoughts?

I'd have to see how well the the chop was done first.

Rib gaps filled?
Front bead replaced and centered?
Etc?

I have an unmolested Mod 24 in 20 ga, and I like it a lot.

The gun you describe is pretty much useless other than as a boat/truck gun for use against bears or people. Collector value probably wasn't much to begin with (it's the Model 27 that is the prized collector piece.) But now that the choke is gone it's not very useful.

So, if yo want something to put behind the seat of your truck, lay in the bottom of your boat or generally just abuse, I guess it could fill that niche. If you think you're going to hunt with it or that it may retain some collector value...not so much.

Right you are.

But can one really consider a Connecticut Firearms Model 21, fine guns that they are, a Winchester?

Sure, maybe even better. IIRC, they have some of the equipment that was used when they bought the trademark rights (Same as they did with the AH Fox)

The 24 is one of the few Winchesters that has virtually no collector interest. They are still a reliable, quality SxS. If it appeals to you, the price isn't bad. If you decide you don't like it, you can get your money out of it.

Yes. That is 1/2 the price of a Stoeger and likely a better made gun. It could be tapped for choke tubes and still be less than a base Stoeger.

the 12 ga model 24 IS kinda fat around the action, the 16ga version is about right and the 20 guage version even righter. IMHO these actions are stronger and longer lasting than the Stevens/Savage 311 series . I would cerakote or otherwise coat it and use it as a coach gun any day !
