Greetings; A winchester 62A-how can I get the hammer spring and rod back into the reciever? I will never take it out again. I have tried forward and backward with no luck. I know how it should go but can't over come the spring tension. I have the spring on the rod and have compressed it and pinned it, but getting the hammer and the rest in place is my problem. The spring needs to be compressed more for everything to line up. If anyone knows or has a gunsmith trick I would really appreciate your knowledge. Thanks for any help. James

It's been some time since I had a 62A apart.

But I seem to remember using a couple different sizes of tapered brass punches to get everything lined up for the hammer / carrier sleeve to be inserted.

Insert a smaller one on the left side to partially align the parts & compress the spring, then the larger one on the right side to hold everything in place while you put the hammer / carrier sleeve in.

Don't recall it being particularly difficult.

recmodeler, no problem getting everything lined up. I've got the sleeve in. My problem is in getting the spring and rod in. I have not been able to overcome the spring tension and get the rod/spring in place. Thanks for your reply. James

You have the buttstock off? I'm guessing you do because of your "tried forward and backward" phrasing.

If you do, and if you are able and equipped to do it, a very small hole drilled through the spring rod at the back that would allow you to compress the spring on the bench in a vise and push the rod through that "hammer spring abutment" (the one with a hole that the rod extends through) enough to allow you to put a paperclip through your new hole to hold the spring in tension as you put it into place behind the hammer may be your way out.

Was that too much a run-on sentence? I'm talking about making yourself a S&W J frame hammer spring compressor mechanism for use in that PITA rifle.

Would that work, you think?

Thanks for the advise. What I finally got to work was my son in law who has very strong hands. They worked good. Thanks James
