I have a Winchester 70 SS Extreme in 30-06. My scope is a 1" Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x40. The rings and bases are the low Leupold dual dovetail.

How high is the sight height above the bore for the purposes of ballistics calculations?

Thanks.

About 1.4"
The height difference between the firing pin and the gap between the ring halves.

Hi. What are you doing with it?
I'm not convinced that any ballistics program is much use. Far too many variables and, as a computer tech, I don't know any programmers that shoot.

Use a ruler and measure the distance from the middle of the bore to the middle of the mounted scope.

For hunting use, just figure on two inches high at 100 yards. That's about dead-on at 200 and about six inches low at 300. Carrying on, figure about two feet low at 400 and roughly four feet low at 500 with that zero.

Beyond 300, that holds for boat-tailed bullets of 150, 165 and 180 grains. That's the way it worked out on my range. :)
