I've been using Win 748 for my .30-30 with 150gr bullets and it seems to work pretty well.

I was looking at the Hogdon online data guide and I was really surprised to see Win 748 listed from .223 up to .30-06 (with lighter bullets, anyway).

Do you all find that it works well in either .223 or in .30-06, or is it marginal at these ends of the spectrum?

I'm getting to the bottom of my can and I'm thinking about picking up a few more pounds...if it works well in more than .30-30 then maybe I need to stock up.

Winchester 748 has been my "go to" powder for the .223 for more years than I can remember. I bought my Varminter in 1978, and my first Mini-14GB about the same time, and I've been using 748 in them exclusively, with 52 and 55 grain bullets. I consider it an excellent powder for the .223.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I agree with ReloaderFred and Lone Gunman, 748 is great for lighter bullets in .223 Remington. I used it with bullets up to the 62 grainers, but I have better luck with a tad slower powder with heavier bullets. I think it was Midway that had a sale on A2230 for $9.95 a pound a couple years back, so I bought a ton of that stuff and I like that too, but again for lighter bullets. Once I use that up I'll go back to 748 though. Oh, I can't comment on 748 in the 30-06, I haven't put those two together.

i use 748 in 223 and 308.... it does great job in either.... for the 308 i like a 165 gr BTSP hornady, 748 & Mag primer, which has taken a few elk for me.... and anything else i have busted a cap on... good luck..

I've shot many, many pounds of W748 in .223; a bunch more in .308. I've also used it in .30-30, .30-06, and doubtless a few more cartridges that I can't recall.

748 actaully slightly edged out H322 as my favorite .223 powder. I have groups well under .60" (at 100 yds.) with 50 and 55 gr. bullets out of my inexpensive Rem. "Sportsman 78" using 748.

Lone Gunman:
I believe you will find W-W 748 and Hodgdon Varget basically the same powder as far as burning characteristics are concerned. I did not say they are the same powder and loading data is interchangeable but they are close enough to be identical twins. When one is not available, I will use the other...with the proper loading data. JMHO :)

Am very pleased with 748 in 30-30, 307 and 308. Accuracy seemed to increase with mag primers.
