yeah that's me...

Hey how are things on top of the mountain?

The VZ is waiting for it's barrel to show up - a hand-lapped Stainless Steel 280 Ackley Improved by Gary Schneider. Once I get my hands on that I will true the action and bolt-lugs and do the rest of the metal work then send it out to re-harden. Then it's stock bedding time... It will be a while but I will be sure to keep you posted.

It's a great acion though - thank you much!

I was going to go shoot my Mark 12 tomorrow but now I will have to wait until October/November... :D

Nice and cool, not even 60 today :D I spent a couple days in Tucson before my shift, sweated like a pig... not used to it any more...

Glad you like the action, sounds like its going to be a good project.

I wonder if there is any good varmint shooting opportunities in NM that you might know of?

I used to shoot prairie dogs up near Mormon Lake outside of Flagstaff but that was 10+ years ago and the population is long gone due to extended drought. It was great shooting with shots up to 600-yards possible – I miss those days…

When I was driving through NM back in April I was wondering if there was anything there to shoot - maybe near Deming??

Nothing I know of around Deming, but a friend of mine in Las Cruces goes up to the north east for varminting every year. He got back a couple weeks ago and said there were lots available to shoot, huge prairie dog towns.. I'll ask him more about it next time I see him.

You should look into Mt. Graham, open Sept to May for Aberts squirrel. No chance for long shots in the woods, but a lot of fun with a .22lr I bet.

John,

Do not know if you are still following this, but on a different note, I am making progress on the VZ24...

I have had a Dakota bolt knob TIG-welded on, filled in the small pitting on the right side of the receiver, and once I am finished shaping, the action and bolt is going to Gre-Tan Rifles http://www.gretanrifles.com/ for a total work-over...

Gre-Tan will dial the receiver in off of the bolt-raceway axis http://www.gretanrifles.com/actiontruing.asp so that all of the machine work is concentric and square to that datum, then re-cut the bolt lug engagement surfaces, inner torque shoulder, receiver face, receiver barrel threads, and bore the receiver...

THEN, he re-cuts the bolt face, bolt lugs, bushes the firing pin hole and fits the firing pin, and then sleeves the bolt to fit the receiver bore...

After all that it will go to Blanchard's for re-hardening.

Whew!

I can't wait to get it back.

I've decided on 280 Ackley Improved and have a Schneider 8-twist polygon barrel in a light varmint contour for it so it can hurl high BC 175g bullets at slightly less than 7mm MAG velocities...

I will post photos when I can.

My dad (80 years old this year) has a 1956-manufactured Model 94 that's never been fired. I've been pestering him to give it to me, but up until recently, if he did, I would've had to go out and shoot it. A month or so ago, I got a AR-15, so I don't have a crying need to shoot an otherwise virgin 54-year-old rifle. Maybe he'll see that and give me the Winchester.
