Hello,

A friend recently gave me a Winchester '94 30-30, saying that he felt it was broken. With the action open and looking into the chamber there is a small cut out at about 2:00 on the chamber. WE both know that the cut out is supposed to be there. His concern is that it appears to be broken in that area, as it is not a smooth cut or notch, but rough metal. The gun is about 10 years old, and he said he never noticed this before, and now doesn't want it and was going to get it destroyed. Of course I couldn't let that happen, and had to take it before he did that. My question is does that cut out on the -94 usually look that way, or is he right, and there is some problem with the gun. A very bad picture is attached.

That's the extractor cut on the breech end of the barrel.

It looks like this one on for sale on e-Bay:

The notch should look like this:

Does it?

Does the rifle cycle cartridges reliably from the tube magazine, into the chamber, extract them, and eject them out the top ok? A roughly-cut extractor groove notch isn't necessarily a show-stopper.

I guess. I ended up with another of his guns not too long ago for similar reasons. Granted that was a Ted Williams bolt action full choke 16 ga shotgun that isn't worth more than $50, but hey, I just can't see a gun destroyed.

My bet is it is an angle eject right?

Are the sights aligned and straight up and down? (has the barrel turned somehow)

If it is an AO, then I am not sure how it could have chipped. If it fed shot and worked well, I would probably not worry about it. The price was right. If it bothers you, try posting a better picture and maybe we can help.

Is it broken, or just packed with crud? Clean it out with a folded pipe cleaner and a good solvent.
