Winchester 94ae xtr 30-30, trying to piece this together

I have a Winchester 94ae XTR 30-30 from 1985, the one that was giving out with select(or maybe not) chevy trucks by the dealer. It was my dads, so I have no way to find out what any details on it. It's never been fired, looks like a brand new rifle. I've tried searching about this model and find about as much as I've already mentioned here.

However, during my search, I came across a two different people selling this rifle with in the past 6 years and they had pictures still with the posts. Actually, I found more than that, but these two particular instances created another question. This rifle is the bare rifle, but in the gun cabinet is a Tasco 4x32 scope, new, and a set of see through rings for this rifle, new in the bag. I was wondering if anyone knew if this rifle came with these accessories? I ask because those two instances I came across had the exact same scope mounted to the rifle, and the scope mounts looked to the identical as well.

There is no box or paperwork with this rifle that I could find. Being unfired, I'm tempted to just make a display case for it and mount it on the wall. It's a beautiful rifle, and doesn't seem to suffer from some of the post 64 changes that caused such a big stir with the 94 crowd. But from what I could tell, some of the components in this rifle that were initially changed in 64, had been changed again, sometime in the late 70's, early 80's, to more desirable parts. Maybe not what they were in pre 64 models, but definately not what they were in the post 64 models.

While searching, I found that while they made this for the Chevy dealers in 85, they apparently made some for Dodge in 84? Any idea on how many were made or point me in a place that might provide a little moe information on these?

The angle eject is a great deer rifle for eastern stlye woods hunting, and the added plus of being able to mount a scope low over the bore makes it even more a value.

Look at the Tasco and see if it is one of Japanese manufacture, they have great glass and are better than the new Chinese made Tascos.

IMO I would ditch the see through mounts and find the lowest possible mounting ring and base combo.

That will make your dads rifle one you would be hard pressed to find a better rig!

crracer, If it is stamped XTR and stamped Angle eject in 30-30 I think that that combination was only available from 1984 to 1987. This would match your information as to the years it was a promo with Dodge and Chevy. I know nothing of the promo. Winchester later called the same feature side eject. From 1979 to 1984 the same 94XTR in 30-30 was available without the angle eject. Does your rifle have a push button safety? All angle ejects have 100% steel forging.

The XTR's have checkering and are a little better finished. Winchester actually sold out to the United States Repeating Arms Company in 1980 and somewhere on that rifle you will probably see USRAC stamped as well as Winchester. They made a lot of changes for the better and rifles made during the 1980's and 1990's are generally some of the better Winchesters. They made big improevents toward fixing many of the problems of the guns made during the 60's and 70's.

Any 94 is bringing a premium right now. I'd keep it and use it, but throw the mounts as far as I could. Current Tasco scopes are junk, but those made in the 80's were a decent scope for the day. It might be worth keeping. If it were mine I'd use it either with iron sights or with a low powered scope mounted as low as possible in conventional mounts.

Several truck companies gave away rifles, shotguns with new trucks back in the day. I doubt if any were specifically made for Ford, Dodge etc., just purchased by the car dealer and passed along with the purchase. I could be wrong, but do not believe the rifle give aways were a national thing, but more of an individual dealership thing.

I had seen that this rifle woulda been in the USRAC era. It is stamped 'Winchester Model 94AE XTR Cal. 30-30 WIN'. Below that it says 'Made in New Haven, Conn. U.S.A. Winchester Proof Steel'. On the butt stock pad it has the winchester medalion that says 'Winchester trademark licensed from Olin Corp' on top and 'U.S. Repeating Arms Company' on bottom. Serial number is 5291XXX.

There is no safety, other than the lever has to be squeezed to release the trigger. As for that scope and mount, I have no idea about them other than the mounts are for a Winchester 94AE(the bolt pattern lines up). The scope may or may not have been with the gun or may have not even been meant for that rifle. I was only inquiring as I had seen two of these Chevy outdoorsman winchesters with the exact same scope mounted on them when searching the internet, both dated back 4 to 6 years. I just thought it odd that I had a loose scope that was the same as those on the same rifle. Scope has never been mounted to this rifle.

If I were to use it, I don't think I'd put a scope on it, kinda like the sights. As for the scope, I have a 10/22 in mind to put it on.

JMR40, as far as the chevy tie in, it has a gold medalion set in the butt stock with a bowtie in the middle with 'Chevrolet' in the bowtie, and the outer edge of the ring says '1985 Chevy outdoorsman' around the top and 'Winchester' around the bottom.

It does have checkering on both stocks, hood over the front sight. I'll try to post some photos.

Was not aware of that, but am not surprised. Winchester has made hundreds, maybe thousands of special runs of 94's for every imaginable purpose. Most are only valuable to a few select individuals.

Well, I can remember in the 70's 80's and early 90's dad always had a new Chevy truck. Bought his first Ford in 99, second in 02. Me, I've always have a chevy, so I thought it was kinda neat in that aspect.

I thought maybe you weren't aware of it, I wasn't either, but then I've only looked at the 94's from the oustide, never owning one before. Now that I have this one, it's surprising how little information there is out there on this type of edition.

There's a Chevy commemorative now on the Guns America auction site. It has the Tasco scope and (those god awful) see thru sights, so I'd bet they did come with the rifle. What you have is a very nice, LNIB, c. '84-'85 XTR. The Chevy madalion would add, detract, or be neutral to value, depending on who might buy it.

It’s not particularly rare though people do collect Winchester commemorative rifles, and guys do like their Chevys. Not having the box would be a minus for collectors. Winchester, USRAC, and others made literally hundreds of commemorative variations. I don’t think yours is a “factory” commemorative, which is to bad since most factory commemoratives are Curio & Relic eligible, greatly expanding the market for them online. As an unfired .30-30 XTR carbine without the safety (which was added in ‘92), I’d value it in the $450 to $600 range depending on your area.
