Anyone know the value of a second year production 1885, thick sided action? A guy I know has one that I want to purchase, but does not know how much to sell it for. How does $1200 sound? Thanks.

Jerry

what caliber? condition is everything! Is it all original, has it ever been re-blued?There is a big difference between a collectable one and just a shooter.

complete rebuild in the 1950s to a target rifle. Reblued action. Just want it for a shooter. In very good mechanical condition.

reblued and altered your price seems fair, all original and nice bluing can bring $2000.and up

Have appraised several. Go get ahold of a bluebook, learn the rating methods and understand that a rebuild, restoration, or refinish does not necessarily enhance value. If it is not in an original caliber, doesn't have a correct barrel, has the numbers/letters buffed out, it is a parts donor. I'd have to see it to believe in a value of 1200. I can be wrong but I've seen too many butchered 86s, hiwalls, lowalls and 92s/73s that people thought were worth a fortune but would be hard pressed to bring 500 as parts guns. If you like it, and want it and don't plan to turn a huge profit, buy it.

PapaG,

Understood. I am looking for a solid one in good shape that I can use for a rebuild to 45-90. Not planning on selling it. All the other parts I will sell. The action was lightly buffed when it was re-blued but all marking are real good. I plan to case color it, put new wood barrel and etc. Just need the action to start with.

A nice 1950s target rifle is probably worth that for itself.

For a buildup, a new C. Sharps 1885 action is $1195.
You would be paying that for an antique, less whatever you could get for the modern parts.

Me?
I have an 1899 production model, rebored and reblued, that I paid more for to shoot in BPCR.

Jim,

I am more interested in the antique BPCR myself. I will have to do a little homework on it. Thanks.
