I just added .45 acp to my reloading list so I've started to buy large pistol primers. I notice that Winchesters say "for standard and magnum" applications where other brands have separate standard and magnum primers. Does this mean the Winchesters are more energetic than other brands' standard primers? Would that imply better ignition and more complete powder burn in lighter loads?

They tend to be a slight bit "hotter" than some brands according to some but I see no difference other than the primer cup is a bit harder than some brands standard LPP. When working up a load if you change or substitute components always work up using that combo as well. In a 45 ACP I personally find no difference changing brands of primers as long as they are not MAG only type. You should work up loads yourself however as your results MAY be different.:)

Remington only makes 1 large pistol primer, like Win. Rem. 2 1/2 Large Pistol. I use the WLP for both 45acp & 44mag. Works ok. The Win. primer works well with H110/W296.

I use WLP's for both 45 acp & 44 magnums. Let's me stock just one type for large primers.

Magnum primers have nothing to do with light loads or the cartridge name. They're about the powder used.

I have used Winchester primer almost exclusively for more than 25 years in all calibers with consistent results. I have over 50,000 in stock currently. I am a believer.
