I was elk hunting in a drizzle, which turned cold. I was carrying Bigfoot Wallace, my custom '03 in .35 Brown-Whelen. This rifle has a Mashburn trigger, which is an enclosed design similar to the new Model 70s. It froze up.

My backup rifle was a pre-'64 Model 70 in .30-06, and I had no trouble.

I'd go with the Kimber because it has an open trigger design.

The new South Carolina guns changed my mind. Winchester should have shut down their old plant years ago.
Agreed, the new ones (post-'64) were crappurate until now. :D The best guns (as far as fit, finish, and workmanship are new model 70s and A-bolts, and the M70 is the better deal.

You know that the new M70s are designed with the claw extractor just like the pre-'64 models, right? Though I have not shot one, it felt nice and appeared to be identical to the old CRF action. I have nothing bad to say about Kimber, they are very well made, but a great deal more costly than a new M70.

Right.

The reason I think so highly of the new 70s is not because there are no other nice rifles out there, but rather because it's a production rifle in the $700 price class and it compares favorably with guns that cost far more.

Yup. And Bigfoot Wallace, my Springfield, had a claw extractor, too. It wasn't the extractor that failed, it was the enclosed adjustable trigger, which got a little moisture into it and froze up.

The pre-64 Model 70, with its open and easily-adjustable trigger is immune to such a failure.

woooo there cowboy... you mean to tell me that you would scrap your beloved 700 for a model 70...

... looking for a stare in the east...

How can you make the assumption that the model 70 is in any way better than the 700.... the 70's, other than a handfull of pre production rifles have JUST hit dealers shelves.

Have you had a chance to fondel and stroke one of these new model 70's let alone shoot it?

How can a feller make a reasonable, just, judgement without several range sessions?

Could it be the remingtons are growing a tart reputation?

If it were I... I would toss that 700 for a model 70 right away!
Had you going there.... didn't I???

I see, unusual problem but if you have had it happen before I can understand your wariness of the newer design.

Are you my crazy uncle? :neener: At least your not crazy enough to take a Rem. over a Winchester. :D
