Winchester model 12 riot gun/tactical shotgun.

I just found a Winchester Model 12 with a 19 inch barrel. I was at a shop looking for a used S&W 638 that has no lock and instead I found this shotgun. It was matted chromed or nickel plated. It is a takedown, which is why I bought it as it will fit in a vehicle out of the way at 19 inches long. The wood is excellent, plain with a ribbed forearm that has no taper like other forearms I have seen. It is not a trench gun as there are no US markings or heat shield/bayonet lug. The gun is smooth and makes me want to sell the 870, it is so smooth. I am new to model 12s, but I don’t think the finish is factory. It holds 6 rounds in the tube and one in the chamber. I thought the lifter was not working until I checked the forum and found that it is supposed to work this way. Not a problem but if you are used to new shotguns, it will take some practice to load quickly. It was $350.00 which may or may not be a good price but since I wanted a shotgun that takes down quickly. I don’t care if it is a collectors item since it is a working gun now. I like it so much that I am thinking of looking for a model 12 to make into a riot gun with ghost ring sights. Are the riot gun versions of the model 12 rare? Are they expensive? If they are too much more than a standard one I’ll get one and cut it down. If they are all this sturdy and smooth I may have an 870 for sale as well. Looks like I’ll have to save up again for the revolver too. Does anybody know about Model 12 riot guns? Does anybody have one they want to get rid of for less than $400? Is there any shortcomings I should know about? It seems like a very workable design, the slide release is in the perfect position, it takes down rather quickly, and is as smooth as any shotgun I have ever felt.

Model 12's are great shotguns. They are expensive to make, which is why they're not. And your 870 just needs more rounds through it to slick up equally.

As with ALL old shotguns, a checkout by a smith is required.

A dedicated Serious 12 would be a good project for restoring a beater to service, but there's lots of good Serious shotguns out there now.

I've seen a couple project 12s done with open or peep sights. Nice shooters. One was hard chromed over a bead blasted finish, think Marine Magnum.

As for the 12s much overliked slamfire feature, it's a safety issue and not an asset, IMO.

Used field grades run around $300 up. Some prison inventory 12s still show up from time to time, but they get picked over quick. Most Police guns found their way into happy, eager private hands a decade and more ago.
