I have a Winchester Model 12, 2 3/4 chamber, pump, simmons rib barrell, 30" full choke, purchased in approximately 1952. Anyone have an idea of its value? Excellent Condition. I am thinking about selling it.

Thanks

Not sure if this is a fair comparison, but about two years ago, I sold a Model 12 in 16 gauge with a Winchester #1 Skeet barrel (26") with Simmons Rib in 95 -97% condition for $700 on Gunbroker. This particular Model 12 was built in 1923. I had the Simmons rib, new bluing, wood, etc. done in the 1970s.

I'm thinking you could go a little higher, if the Simmons rib were done as a factory add-on by Winchester, but I'm no Winchester expert, I just own some. :)

Sounds like you have someones old trap gun. How does the wood look?

Model 12 values are all over, depending partly on model, condition, and area.

Beater 12s here go for $300 up. New condition trap or skeet models with purty lumber go for four figures.

I bought a 97% 18" 'cyl' choked uncut, unmarked, Model 12 today , serial 1,256xxx(what year would that be?) for $350. It is my new "suitcase shotgun" and ,yes I will be taking it to Africa soon along with a 30-06!

Gordon;
Your model 12 riot gun was made in 1950....$350 was a good price for a clean one[you wont loose anything if you decide to sell it ;maybe even make a little]..The 18in barrel is a little unusual as the standard barrel length on model 12 riots was 21in measured down an empty bore with the action closed...but Winchester would do whatever the customer wanted and some police/security firms/prisons ordered different lengths....

Winchester model 12-12 GA 2 3/4" chamber Full

serial number 1211605. Can anyone tell me when this was manufactured and an approximate value? Thanks for any help...

1949.....hard to give a value not knowing the condition and grade.....300/350 if field grade, plain barrel, 30in full 80/90% original condition...

Your mod 12 probably has little value as a collector since it has a Simmons rib and not a factory vent or solid rib. It depends on the condition of the gun overall and the quality of the wood. With great wood, good fit and finish the gun might be worth $500-800 with the factory wood, normal wear and tear, a ding or two here and there, you are probably looking in the neighborhood of $300. Winchester had many grades of wood in stright and pistol grip stocks and long and short forearms. Before steel shot was mandatory for waterfoul, mod 12's were worth more. In my opinion it is one of the finest shotguns made. At one time I owned sixteen mod 12's and mod 42's. Never owned a 16 or 20 ga.

Unfortunately, if the Model 12 is not factory original the modifications reduce the value. If the wood is original and has any figure, that might add value.
Sight unseen, I would estimate the value at $350-$400 in this area.
The Model 12 is a fine old gun. At one time the Model 12 was "the" shotgun to have. With the introduction of steel shot their value has decreased.
They are still very usable for pheasants and the trap range. I have found the model 97 and model 12 full chokes to throw very dense, hard hitting patterns.

"model 12 full chokes to throw very dense, hard hitting patterns"

My father had his full choked 20 ga. Model 12 banned from a turkey shoot in the late '50s. :) After he had a few successes they said everybody had to shoot a 12 ga.

My understanding is that Simmons is a "factory" rib for a Model 12. I believe they did all their vented ribs for some period of time.

Factory wood, aftermarket wood makes some difference but it totally depends. I've seen full choked 95% Mod 12's with aftermarket wood that went for several thousand dollars. I don't recall seeing a factory original go for more than about $1,200-$1,400. This assumes it's not a Pigeon Grade Gun.

I would guess that if it truly is in excellent condition it is worth at least $600; probably more.

Don't sell it on a whim. Keep asking for input. You have a great gun!

We did ribs for Winchester, remington and mossburg in the 60's and 70's untill they all needed to do these in-house for cost reasons, i still have one of the remington spot welders in the back of the shop.
I also have a couple of thousand winchester vent-ribs still in shipping crates,3/8,5/16 and 1/4 inch.
There are books and writers that know everything about factory installed items that also have no idea what they are talking about.
The ribs and other custom work we did and still do for companies are covered by no-compete and non-discloser agrements, some for 20 years.
But we did rib work and installed cutts and poly chokes and research and design for 3 inch conversions and sub-gauge shotguns for other makers.
What i need is someone who can make our classic style patteren rib, any ideas out there?.

From the wording by the original poster, I assumed this was an add on Simmons rib. That was done a lot. A picture of the top of the receiver would tell us if it was or was not original. A picture of the left and right of the gun would let us evaluate the condition and other features to better estimate a value.
