Hi,

I'm looking to purchase a bolt action rifle in a "big game" caliber. No I don't have anything particular in mind. I just think it would be cool to have in the collection but I might have an opportunity to hunt elk in the future. I realize that there are better cartridges for elk, but would like a versatile rifle.

I want something with controlled round feeding should the opportunity arise to ever use it on dangerous game. I keep coming back to the new production Winchester Model 70 Safari Express. .375 H&H magnum seems to be the most economical and widely available caliber for this type of rifle.

Do these, new production, model 70 rifles have the old, pre-64 type extractor claw? I understand that they do.

For an optic I've been considering the Trijicon Accupoint 1-4x w/ BAC illuminated triangle reticle.

Does this combination sound like a good one?

I would probably upgrade the stock to a McMillan or something similar.

Also, how should I go about mounting the scope so that the iron sights on the winchester could still be used in an emergency? Simple QD rings?

Thanks again.

Don't forget ruger safari. They have a 375 ruger cartrage that is shorter but slightly faster round also have a 416 ruger. They have had the control feed system for many years with the mark II. You must be planeing a grizz or african trip.

As far as I know, the current production Model 70s are only made with the claw extractor and push feeds are no longer available.

Can't tell you about the sites but I agree with your choice of the model 70. They have been my favorites for the past 5 years after I bought one of the last Stealths to come out of the old factory.

And before that I liked Remington, but after seeing what they produce now I'm no longer a fan.

No idea what you're going to do with the .375 H&H. I have a .300 H&H Remington Classic that I bought for big game. It rarely gets shot as it just isn't something pleasant to shoot, and I don't travel like I used to.

My problem is I can't keep the drool from flooding the keyboard.

It's a great rifle and IMO the ultimate elk round.

Good for many other things also.

I shoot deer with my 338win mag, so 375HH for elk would be awesome! Dont listen when others tell you its way too much. Just dont shoot it in the eatin parts.;)
That Trijicon looks pretty cool but im not sure if I would want to be looking at an elk 300yds away, through a 24mm lens. and paying $800 to do so. I have zero experience with these scopes though.... It could be 10 times better than the best I have which is only a Leupold vx2....which I love for what I do with it btw
(im afraid to look through anything better, cause then all my guns will "need" one too:banghead:)

HOOfan the extractor claw is what makes a controlfeed action.

I know. The OP asked if the current production Model 70's used the claw/controlled round feed. I believe when Winchester reintroduced the "pre '64" action back in the early '90s they still had the push feed actions available as well. I was pointing out that I think controlled round feed is the only option from Winchester now.
