winchester model 70 stock refinish

Not sure if this is where i post this, but i Just got a winchester model 70 lightweight at a steal. Bluing on all the metal is around 90%+. very minimal wear. the reason i got it so cheap was it looked like someone dragged the stock down a dirt road. Big gouge in the bottom of the stock in front of the hinge plate, several scratches and small dents. I want to refinish the stock myself. I have refinished several stocks with tru oil etc and they all came out great, considering what they looked like before? anyone got any tips on refinishing this gun stock to get it back to looking close to factory orig. I don't really want that freshly refinished look if you get my drift. just want to to look the way it did before someone fed the stock to a rabid beaver. checkering on the stock is still perfect , no nicks or gouges in it. am kinda cought between a rock and a hard place on this. I figure the checkering gonna turn out a different shade than the rest of the stock,,, I'd like to be able to get it back to kinda all matching and blending in.... all advise is greaty appreciated!

I believe you can order those stocks new for not much money...may not be what you wanna do, just thought I'd throw it out there.

I've done it with furniture stripper. Keep it away from anything plastic or rubber (pull off the grip cap and recoil pad if you can; mask what you can't and work carefully). I'd go easy with the sandpaper.

I put two coats of polyurethane on the inside and under the grip cap. Several coats of pure tung oil on the rest.

Here's what I started with. Somebody had put a heavy, drippy coat of varnish on everything (note the yellow-line spacers). What looked like pitting on the blueing turned out to be varnish handprints all over the barrel, receiver, etc. Got a pretty good deal on it as it looked terrible on the rack at the store.



After strip, very light sanding, stain and finish:

I would love to hear about or, better yet, see your progress. I am thinking about buying a beater just to learn how to recondition a gun. Would be a good winter project.

Brownell's has a Winchester pre 64 stock finish product 130-820 that works great. They also have a Winchester pre 64 stock stain product 380-915, or you can use MinWax Special Walnut stain that works good. Do not sand the checkering, and do not round the sharp edges of the barrel channel. Fill any deep gouges with glass bedding. First sand with 250 grid and finally with 400 grid. Apply the stain and let dry a day or two and then go over the stock lightly with 000 steel wool to remove the excess. Apply more than one coat if you want a darker stock. After you get the right color apply the Winchester pre 64 finish, and after it dries remove the excess with 000 or 0000 steel wool. Remember that you want the stain and finish inside the wood instead of on top of the wood. The steel wool provides a smooth matt finish. Shooter
