A customer brought me a Winchester Model 71 completely disassembled, shrugs, and says, "Good luck, man."

I'm going to need it.

The Gun Digest disassembly book has been completely useless on this one. The rifle is fundamentally different than the '94, and the interrelationship between the carrier, lever, and bolt carrier has me completely stumped. If anyone could give me a bit of advice on how to properly assemble this monstrosity, I'd appreciate it greatly. Pictures would be extremely helpful.

There is not much on the Model 71, but it is the Model 1886 under another name and essentially an upsized Model 1892 and instructions for either should work.

The gun is complex (like all Browning's civilian designs, when an Army board wasn't forcing the KISS principle on him) but not so bad that anyone familiar with other Winchester lever actions would be stymied.

NRA firearms assembly 3 wich is a soft cover book has instructions and a diagram on assebling the Model 71. I have no way of scanning it but would gladly mail you a photo copy if needed.

I'll give the manuals for the 1886 and 1892 a shot. I've got everything figured out but the damn carrier. Hopefully there's some better pictures out there.

Finally got it. Had to knock a few burrs off the inside of the hole in the carrier that the hammer screw bushing sits in, polish the bushing itself a bit, and with a bit of oil and a rawhide mallet, it all settled in. Thanks for the help, gents.
