Winchester "Pesonal Defense" ammo: Opinions? Chrono.?

This is the jhp ammo that Walmart sells in the white 50 count boxes.

I shot some of the .45 cal Win. Personal Defense ammo on Friday, and my P97 ate it like candy.
I've been carrying the 9mm stuff in my PM9.

Any opinions or chronograph data on any of this ammo?
It is reasonably priced for jhp ammo, but I figure it probably not loaded very hot.
The 9mm stuff did seem to have a louder report than the Winchester white box fmj.
 
i've been shooting the 180gr. jhp in .40 and it's 10 x's more accurate then the regular fmj in the same weight...

thanks to an a-d i found out that it's hot enough to destroy itself through some cardboard boxes and a sheet of drywall... most of the jacket came off in the boxes and the lead penetrated the 3/8" drywall and stopped in the fiberglass, it was about 1 1/2" long and the size of a pencil when i picked it out of the wall... :rolleyes:

oh yeah and it's really loud !!! in a 120 sq ft room.... just don't do it...
 
I have fired some of the USA brand [AKA Winchester White Box], Personal Protection 230-Gr JHP loads and the ammo functions flawlessly in both my Ruger KP-90 and Springfield 1911-A1 Champion model.
Don't have a chrony, so can't really comment on that aspect.

Last time I looked, the USA brand was about $17/50 at my local Wally World.
 
I recently switched to the Personal Defense ammo because I found it to be more accurate in both of my carry 1911's than the Hydra Shocks I had been carrying. I don't notice a lot of recoil difference in the full size, but in my officers model, the Personal Defense does have noticeably more recoil.

I like the fact that it is sold in 50 -round boxes, like handgun ammo should be sold!

I have used the 9mm in my Glock 19 and Sig P226, and the .45 in my old Combat Commander and my Glock 21. These weapons have proven to be very accurate with this ammo.

Sorry, but no chrono data yet. Maybe I'll have some spare range time soon for some testing.
 
No experience with the 45 ACP but have shot lots of it in 9mm.
It runs about 10-12$ for 50 locally and seems hotter than regular WB.

It's accuate. I have it in my carry 9mm because it is cheap enough to practice with and I'm am confident it will hit where I point it. Otherwise I like Speer GD.
Sure would not want to take a hit from either one!

No chrono data though, sorry.
 
I like the 50 round boxes too.
That is why I have been experimenting with it myself.
I have gone through a couple of boxes in my PM9 with no problem, but I had a couple of feed failures on Friday.
Could have been mag related.
I'm over the 300rd mark, and those are the first two failures of any kind with the gun.
More testing is in order.

I had bought some cheap CCI fmj, for my Ruger P97.45 and picked up a box of the Win. jhp just to give it a try.
I like the fact that it is a full weight .45 bullet, and it is a hollow point.
The P97 appeared not to notice the difference between the jhp and the fmj, either in feeding or accuracy.

If anybody gets a chance to throw some across a chrono. and compare it to some other rounds, it sounds like we would appreciate it.

From the recoil and noise, I suspected that the jhp rounds were a little hotter.
Cool!

As for accuracy, I'm still working with the Ruger P97, and the Kahr PM9, but for now, it looks like both are plenty accurate enough for CCW ammo for me.

how far was the chronograph from the barrel of the gun?

the 9mm velocities seem about 75 fps lower than they should, but if it was measured at 10 feet from the barrel thats not too bad
 
There's info on the USA 115JHP on Ammolab, with expansion results, penetration, and velocities from a G17 and G19. It looks pretty good, even compared to the +P+ Rangers that cost 150% more.
 
I've been carrying this for a while now, in both my 9's and my 45's. I've found it to be accurate and reliable, which are my primary criteria - and the ammolab tests looked good as well.
 
Yeah, I liked the stuff before, but the more I learn about it, the more I like it. :cool:
Good performance, easily available (Walmart), good prices.
 
Distance, arrghh, didn't note that. IIRC 7-8 ft.

We did a bunch of tests that day and handscrawled notes. Since then I crashed my pc and didn't have that info backed-up.:(

FWIW and in my limited experience , a lot of published velocities don't duplicate from actual individual's guns. I've noticed this from those more accomplished , like our own Mr. Stephen Camp, for example, we have many more members in the ammo business also.

I like Winchester Ammo, grew up and competed with it, use powders, primers, wads, bullets, brass...etc.

No offense , but IMO its the lawyers that keep the #'s down. A few companies disregard and make the ammo that better represents the #'s.

Good reason to reload, get what works in a particular gun and use, and price. IMO and limited experience.
 
I've run a few hundred rounds of the Winchester USA white-box 230-grain JHPs through my Kimber Custom...no jams or mis-feeds, accurate, and runs for about $15 bucks for 50 rounds here...it's my carry load now!

I've picked up the same brand in 180-grain JHP for my recently-acquired SIG P239 in .40 and I'm expecting the same great performance.
 
I bought 10 boxes of the HP 40S&W stuff when a local sporting goods store first got it in. $9/box. For the price, it's the best .40 ammo I've ever shot.

Have no clue about velocities but I'd feel more comfortable with a magazine of 155 Gr Gold Dots. ;)
 
The 110 grain 357 Magnum makes a glorious daytime fireball out of the cylinder gap and is accurate enough to make pop cans dance at 50 yards. N Frame 8 3/8" barrel.
