Why does Winchester LP primer have a duel role but their small pistol primers come in Standard or Magnum?

Not necessarily. I have Winchester Small Pistol primers that are Standard/magnum. Along with Large Rifle Primers that are for standard/magnum rifle.

You do have a valid question though. I, too, will be waiting for the answer.;) Never gave it much thought before.:scrutiny:

They supposedly are good for mag loads. I have not tried them as I still have some Fed Mag Pistol Primers and don't use them a lot.:)

I ask this question because I am using Hodgdon Powder H110 and it call for a magnum primer for 44Mag and 357Mag. I was concerned that Winchester's LP primer might not be the best choice to use with H110 while loading 44Mag. I have not had any problems using Winchester primers with either my RCBS RockChucker or Lee Turret. Do you think I should switch to a different brand that is just LP Magnum or stick with what I have?

My reason, when using assorted head stamp cases (in particular S&B) I
found that the Winchester primers seemed to be a bit oversized; which
resulted in a few crushed primers. OTOH, Federal primers seat perfectly
every time, and without problems. ;) :D

S&B has been the only brass I have an issue with seating primers. Anytime I have had one go off, it has been in S&B brass. Federal primers are softer than Winchester and will seat a little easier, however, I would lay the blame on the brass and not the primer. Once again, my experience with S&B brass. I toss any casing that doesn't seat easily, after weeding through the rounds a few times, I haven't had any issues.

I've lit off more than a few 44mag rnds with WLP primers and loaded up with H110. Has never been an issue, even when loaded more than 3% below the recommended load (which is not advised). I will say that is a stout round, and I've found 2400 works better for me (a bit more accurate). The H110 load would be great for hunting though. You know it's going to hit hard.

search the archives. there's a long and involved story about how magnum primers came to be that iirc, starts off with cci primers being lighter than they should, so they create magnum primers to make up for it, and others follow suit.

i don't have any idea if that's true though.

Don't know the answer to your questioin but Winchester primers are used ijn all my autoloaders. For my revolvers which have lightened DA tigger pulls I need the softer primer cups of Federaal primers. The Winchester primers seat mote easilly in the variety of scrounged brass.

Does anyone use Federal primers in a Dillon 650?

I use them in my 550 all the time. I've had them seated sideways, upside down, and decapped live ones. Never had a problem.

I use WW for pistol since I can use them in regular and mag calibers. I use Federal Match for large and small rifle

I often wondered how Winchester's WLP could be used for both mag and standard loads. After owning ten 44 mags (7 revolvers) through the years I can say my loads using Winchester WLP has given me some of the best accuracy I have achieved out of a handgun shooting a conventional revolver cartridge. And this was with full doses of 296 , H110 or 2400. The same primer has given me good results with 45 acp as well.

WLP is my most commonly used primer for 44 mag loads these days and all most of my loads are using 296 , H110 and an old lot of AA#9.
