I've never really got to see this ammo until I browsed through a box at the store.
What makes the ammunition so expensive? How to does compare to the modern PDX stuff we have these days.
I understand it's an older JHP design that sort of looks like the "white box" JHP bullets we see at Walmart but without that silver coating. What exactly is that silver? Is it a jacket or a plated jacket? It looks good enough to hunt werewolves with. ;)

I don't know why it is so expensive. As you mentioned it is an older design.

It has a reputation as a rapid expander with shallow penetration. I have some in .45ACP, but it is old. Could be just the batch I had, but I've had more bullet setback with this round than any other. I usually select other rounds when I'm shopping now.

It's marketing and it's been around for many years and it's pretty lightweight stuff. I can't believe they still make it. If you want 40 year old bullet technology then it's just what you're looking for. Aluminum plated bullet. Have fun getting that out of your barrel. There are MUCH better bullet designs available from all of the manufacturers today. I wouldn't pay more than $5.00 for a box. But you will find a lot of old guys who SWEAR by it. It does not even begin to compare with Gold Dots, Golden Saber, SXT, Hydra Shok etc. Maku Mozo (Don't be deluded)

The name Winchester is what costs so much. That company has some lame prices. I'll stick with Hornady.

Even generic ammo like Black Hills loaded JHPs are dreadfully expensive. When I pay good money I just buy Speer Gold dot loads and forget about rest of the stuff. I will not pass closeout deals like what I found on Fiocchi JHPs. If the price is too good to pass up I will buy other stuff.

Great stuff for werewoof hunters! :D

Seriously, I'm a dinosaur and I think those cartridges are totally obsolete these days. Good marketing though...nickel plated copper bullet and call 'em silvertips. I mean, doesn't everyone want silver bullets for things that go bump in the night? :D

For anyone that wants to use the Winchester 9mm 115 gr. and 147 gr. Silvertip JHPs without the associated expense, per Winchester, the WinchesterUSA (aka WWB) ammunition in those weights uses the same projectile minus the nickel plating and is loaded to the same velocity.
