Some of these folks are "winning" in terms of obtaining a much sought after firearm in an online auction. They "win" in terms of being the high bidder.
One of my friends and co-workers actually won a pistol (Ruger LCP w/Laser) at a Friends of the NRA banquet. This gentleman is a medical doctor and a chief executive at my company. It so happens that he was adopted out of Korea as an infant. They had an FFL right there so he's doing the 4473 and puts "Korea" as his place of birth. This created a problem because...well we got 2 Korea's don't we! Dr. ____ doesn't know which one he was born in and given his age, could presumably been either. Fortunately the folks at NICS actually get this and since he could vouche for having been adopted out of South Korea, he got the gun. Kind of a funny story.
He laughed at how the first thing he ever won almost got him chucked into Gitmo.
