I am debating getting a .22 conversion to install on my Springfield P9 or getting a Ruger 22-45. Does anybody have any experience with those or know for sure if it will fit the P9?

I'm looking for a trainer for IPSC type shooting and general plinker. The conversion seems to make more sense as a trainer but I'm concerned about reliabilty. Price is roughly the same so it is not an issue.

Any input appreciated! :)

Most conversions don't seem to do well with the cheap .22lr ammo, which kind of defeats the purpose of the thing IMHO.

Every time I think about getting one, I recall the ones I've seen at the range that were jam-o-matics, blamed on cheap ammo, but then I only shoot a .22 *because* of cheap ammo, $4-$6/50 for .22 ammo to make it work would have me rather be shooting a 9mm instead! So I get another .22 pistol instead -- they all have done well with the cheapest of the cheap ammo.

Another downside is the price of extra mags for the things, $20 for Ruger or Buckmark 10 shot mag is no bargin, but on the conversions good luck finding spare mags for under $35 each. Its another big negative, as I like to have at least enough mags to load up a box of ammo in A/C comfort before I go to the range instead of standing there sweating stuffing rounds in my one magazine.

22 Conversions

The ones that I saw over the last couple years were all packaged with the 45 acp. There were two different frames, a large frame for the 45/10mm/38SA, and a small frame for the 9mm/40SW. I doubt the kit that fits the large frame, would fit the small frame like the P9. Also, I believe EAA has decided to sell all of there pistols on the large frame, so conceivably they might only have kits for the new line of pistols. In theory EAA should be able to tell you what you need to know, getting them to do it...

You might want to consider a CZ Kadet (the whole pistol not the kit). They were selling for NIB at $289, but that was a clearance run and they appear to have gone back to their normal prices.
