I have a Witness .40 pistol that shoots real low. The rear sight is extremely high already; now I know why. It is a ported model.

At 30 yards it shoots about a foot low or more. What can be done with this?

I don't know if they still do,but egw used to work on them and can put some different sights on it.I have a witness with fixed sights that I have to put the frt dot almost on top of the rear two and it is deadly that way.

I will never buy another Tanfoglio pistol. I had one a long time ago and had some trouble with it, thought it was just a lemon. They must have poor QC.

I don't know of any way to fix this, except perhaps a new barrel or something. The rear sight is already twice as tall as any I've ever seen.

That's exactly how this one is, and that's not acceptable to me. As far as I'm concerned, Tanfoglio Witness= Garbage!:banghead:

I hate to bear bad news, but it is unrealistic to expect a fixed sight pistol to shoot exactly to point of aim. Different loads shoot to different points of impact. Sometimes the sight matches your load, sometimes it doesn't.

You can get a higher / adjustable rear sight. You can file down the front sight. You can try different loads.

It's not Tanfolglio's fault, it's just the way it is.

I have never had one shoot even close to this far off. I was using standard 180gr. rounds.

a. The rear sight is already too high for my taste.
b. I would have to file the front sight almost off. They are three-dot sights anyway, and filing won't change the elevation of the dot.
c. I'm using the most common load, and a different load won't change POI as far as this is off. This is a barrel alignment problem or something.

I'm sorry, but I have to strongly disagree. There is something wrong here, sights are not the issue, and it is absolutely unacceptable. I'm not trying to get into an argument, but Kentucky Windage or grinding off the front sight are not a proper fix, to me.

Have you checked the muzzle and/or crown for damage? A damaged muzzle or crown can have a huge effect on the point of impact. The next thing to do, is to check the porting holes. If they were done improperly, that can have a negative effect. Check the lock up on the barrel to slide to frame. If it's loose, it can cause all kinds of strange things Lastly, replace the barrel.

Speaking for myself: 30 yards is a pretty long shot for a handgun. Hope this helps. Keep yer powder dry, Mac.

The crown looks fine, no sign of damage.
The barrel wiggles ever so slightly, maybe a couple thousands of an inch; seems pretty normal.

The porting holes I'm not sure about. I assumed it was factory porting, as I was told by the dealer that I bought it from. It was used and didn't come with the original box. I attached a couple photos; if you have a ported Witness, do these look factory?

That said, while the porting in the slide looks fine, if I look closely there are some very tiny burrs on the holes inside the barrel.

The funny thing is, it does shoot acceptable groups, just real low. Inside of ten yards or so, it's close enough, but the problem becomes much more pronounced at farther ranges. I can bust milk jugs fairly regular out to 100 yards with my S&W629, so I'm not totally incompetent.

Now that I think about it, I had a similar problem once before, a long time ago. I replaced the shot-out barrel in my Ballester Molina .45 with a Colt series 70 barrel. It shot really low. Someone who knew a lot more about them than I did gave me a different barrel link for it and that solved the problem. That doesn't seem to apply at all to the Witness, though.

Maybe I should be looking for a replacement unported barrel for it. I really don't care for porting anyhow.

So did you figure this out yet?

My wife bought the EXACT same pistol on Saturday...(.40 ported & also used).
(the porting looks identical to yours) We took it to the range on Sunday, along
with several other handguns. With Speer LE 165gr Jacked FN we both had a tough time
hitting the targets at 25 yards. I tried it several times at a 8" plate rack @ about 15 yrds,
I was hitting the deflector below the plates even when aiming at the top edge of the plates.

So, I set up a target stand 7 yards from the bench & fired seated off a bag rest. It grouped 6
shots in a tight 1" group 4" low & 1" left. There is "some" sort of issue here.... & though it
could be me... I doubt it. I'm not infailable, but I'm not a novice either. I shoot 1911's, Glocks, revolvers, as well as several others & can regularly hold 2" groups off hand @ 25 yards with any of them. Better if I slow down & try hard.

EGW is right across town from me... I may go talk to them & see what they say. They've
done work for me before.
