There was a little less enchantment in the Magic Kingdom Sunday morning when a 63-year-old Pennsylvania woman was taken into custody for allegedly bringing a loaded semi-automatic into the park.

Disney World security personnel reportedly discovered a silver handgun on Mary Ann Richardson as she entered the park with other family members, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. The .32-caliber Beretta handgun had been loaded with seven live rounds in the magazine, but the chamber was empty, MyFoxOrlando.com reported.

Richardson claimed she regularly traveled with the gun and forgot she had been carrying it around in her purse. Also found in Richardson’s purse was a pair of scissors and a locked blade knife, authorities said. She was charged with possession of a concealed weapon.

Why would they bring up the scissors and knife? .:scrutiny:

Another massacre prevented by no doubt unarmed security personel. Everyone knows how deranged those post menapausal women can become! And more publicity for a no gun zone which was already listed as a probable terrorist target.

Probably a pedophile who brought the scissors to give the kid they molested/kidnapped a quick haircut . ..just a SWAG

WHAT...no mini-flashlight?

from PA to FL carrring a gun in her handbag.......How did she travel?? certainly NOT by plane~unthinkable TSA would allow that.

Too bad she didn't bother getting a PA CCW. They are accepted in Florida.

How do you know she doesn't have one? She wasn't arrested at the airport... she was arrested after trying to enter private property which apparently does not allow CCW carry.

I have season passes to Disneyland, and I have to say this woman was rather carelss or COMPLETELY forgot she had it with her. Before you enter the place to scan your tickets they have a "security" tent. All they do is have you open up your backpacks and purses and glance inside. Every single time I waltz through with a full length trenchcoat, and my wife has to stop and show htem her purse. She makes sure to put some "feminine products" on the top to give them a good view:p.

Don't let this make you feel safer, I ALWAYS have a benchamde in my pocket that noone notices, and my wife and I are constantly joking and muttering about the gun that they missed in her pocket, or in the bottom of the bag. We are both pretty much in agreement that it is a way to profile people for deeper searches without looking like it. I'm sure the Muslim families get checked out alot deeper than us. I would be curious to now the ethnicity of the woman. We're very white suburban america, btw.

Years back I went to Disney WORLD carrying..at that time they didn't wand you. All the can do is ask you to leave , if you refuse they can charge you with armed trespass... Sounds like the lady didnt have a CCW at all, but it is possible she did.

That is one dumb pistol packing grandma.

As another poster said, they inspect all bags before you get close to the entrance, so it is likely she forgot it. However, even if she had a CCW, I doubt they would have let her go as CCW requirements in Florida prohibit you from bringing weapons into places like theme parks, sporting events, etc.

Why would they bring up the scissors and knife?

To dismember the bodies of course. :D

The point is that concealed means "concealed". If it was floating around (most likely in the top of the main part) in her purse, then she probably wasnt a CCW holder, as they shouldn't have been able to find it. I think she just honestly forgot. I guarantee that you can CCW something into the CA Disneyland without being caught. That is, of course, not counting whether you are allowed to or not, just saying they're not looking that hard. The FL Disney may be more strict on their searches, but I have several years experience with CA's.

I also know that you can most likely not get something inside Magic Mountain, CA, as their security is very tight. Even with that it's still one of the scarier places in CA.

As pointed out on Fox News this morning by a criminal profiler who was discussing the Colo. shootings, “we have very conveniently marked all our schools, hospitals, most churches, some shopping malls and theme parks (in most places) as gun free zones”. So why would a deranged killer go to the police station when he can go to any of these other places and “do his thing”?

When I went, disneyworld provided lock boxes (like the bus lockers) for safe storage of firearms. I had the key, went by picked up pistol before I left.

However, even if she had a CCW, I doubt they would have let her go as CCW requirements in Florida prohibit you from bringing weapons into places like theme parks, sporting events, etc.

I am not sure there is a law against it. Theme parks are private property so they can kick you out. If you drink alcohol at a sporting event then, yes, carrying is illegal. Other than that I don't think Florida law prohibits it (as in the state will file charges).

Would our founding Fathers not be shocked her hear of a grandmother sitting in jail for possessing and carrying a pistol? With or without "government approval"?!

I'm just sayin'...

I live near disneyland in California and I know that if she had it on her and not in her purse that she would have gotten away with it cause they just check bags and not the people carrying the bags. I got in there with my benchmade 610 the other day w/o any problems, and thats a pretty big knife. I dont know if the security at Disneyworld is like that or not.

Per Florida State Statute 790.06

(12) No license issued pursuant to this section shall authorize any person to carry a concealed weapon or firearm into any place of nuisance as defined in s. 823.05; any police, sheriff, or highway patrol station; any detention facility, prison, or jail; any courthouse; any courtroom, except that nothing in this section would preclude a judge from carrying a concealed weapon or determining who will carry a concealed weapon in his or her courtroom; any polling place; any meeting of the governing body of a county, public school district, municipality, or special district; any meeting of the Legislature or a committee thereof; any school, college, or professional athletic event not related to firearms; any school administration building; any portion of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, which portion of the establishment is primarily devoted to such purpose; any elementary or secondary school facility; any career center; any college or university facility unless the licensee is a registered student, employee, or faculty member of such college or university and the weapon is a stun gun or nonlethal electric weapon or device designed solely for defensive purposes and the weapon does not fire a dart or projectile; inside the passenger terminal and sterile area of any airport, provided that no person shall be prohibited from carrying any legal firearm into the terminal, which firearm is encased for shipment for purposes of checking such firearm as baggage to be lawfully transported on any aircraft; or any place where the carrying of firearms is prohibited by federal law. Any person who willfully violates any provision of this subsection commits a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

Just some useful Information

You wouldn't need to go that far back. Eleanor Roosevelt reportedly carried a pistol in her purse. Of course, that was back in the day when "Jim Crow" laws were only enforced against 2nd class citizens. Seems we still have the same laws, but now we are all 2nd class citizens... :cuss:

Thanks DC300a, I had no idea sporting events were off limits. I do not see a mention of theme parks there, only in the spots they serve alcohol.

even if she had a CCW, I doubt they would have let her go as CCW requirements in Florida prohibit you from bringing weapons into places like theme parks, sporting events, etc.

As the relevant Florida statute, posted by DC300a shows, theme parks are most certainly NOT among the places concealed carry is prohibited. The most Disney could have done was to ask her to leave. If she refused, she could be cited for trespass. The fact that she was charged with possession of a concealed weapon, if indeed that part of the story is correct, indicates that she did not have a either a Florida non-resident CCW permit or a PA permit.

Seminole is 100 percent correct. There is no FL law against CCW in theme parks.
This is just Disney policy. If the woman turns out to have a CCW recognized by FL, the charges will be dropped and Disney will have egg on their asinine faces.

Besides the CCW restrictions regarding sporting events and such, keep in mind that most of Disney's theme parks do serve alcohol. Furthermore, I have personally asked a supervisor in charge of security at Disney what they recommend for people to do who do not want to leave a firearm in their car. The supervisor specifically discussed how it is illegal to bring the firearm into the park, but that it could be stored in a locker. Lastly, some of you must not have read the article where is said;

"Stringent, zero-tolerance, security measures have been in place at all Central Florida theme parks since September 11, 2001"

While I am not sure it is a case the prosecutor would win, they certainly can arrest you which tends to ruin most vacations. :D

Also, I cant imagine why anyone would want to bring a gun into a Disney theme park. :scrutiny:

Besides the CCW restrictions regarding sporting events and such

Last time I checked Disneyworld has nothing to do with sporting events.

keep in mind that most of Disney's theme parks do serve alcohol.

Florida statute says no CCW in:
"any portion of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, which portion of the establishment is primarily devoted to such purpose;"

So as long as Grandma stays out of the bars in Disneyworld, she has not broken the law.

Furthermore, I have personally asked a supervisor in charge of security at Disney what they recommend for people to do who do not want to leave a firearm in their car. The supervisor specifically discussed how it is illegal to bring the firearm into the park, but that it could be stored in a locker.

Does the supervisor's recommendation carry the weight of law? Is the supervisor licensed to practice law in Florida? Does the supervisor have any legal expertise at all? Clearly the answer is no because his answer is not in agreement with Florida statutes. So why should we care what the supervisor thinks?

Lastly, some of you must not have read the article where is said;

"Stringent, zero-tolerance, security measures have been in place at all Central Florida theme parks since September 11, 2001"

That is all well and good, but it isn't illegal to CCW in a theme park. They can ask you to leave, and you would get a trespassing ticket if you didn't comply (I believe this is the law in Florida, but am not 100% certain).

While I am not sure it is a case the prosecutor would win, they certainly can arrest you which tends to ruin most vacations.

Prosecutors do not arrest people, police officers do. I guess there are two kinds of people: Those who stick up for their rights, and those who take the easy way out. I know what kind of person I am. I will not criticize you if you want to take the easy way out, but please show us the same respect if we don't agree with you.

Also, I cant imagine why anyone would want to bring a gun into a Disney theme park.

The same reason why you would want to carry in a mall, or a church, or a school, or anywhere else that criminals can go.

While I don't know for sure, my guess is that Grannie didn't have a permit which is why she was arrested.

Yet another reason not to go get ripped off by the mouse. No CCW permitted, then they don't deserve my patronage.

Jeez, I've never seen the media make such a fuss about something so trivial. Here was a grandma in her 60's who happened to have THREE of her grandchildren with her.

She was interviewed on TV and she said that she lives alone and carries the pistol in her purse for protection. Further, she said that she is forgetful of a lot of things, and that she just forgot that the pistol was in her purse. I can believe that. Once you've carried for a long time, it is quite easy to forget that you even have the gun on you (or with you).

The way the media is acting, they just stopped the next mass murder from happening. Yeah, I can see it now. Sixty-something year old (white) grandmother with 3 grandkids in tow is going to terrorize Disneyland and shoot Mickey Mouse and Goofy. Gimme a break.

H3LL, they arrest dozens of thugs every day in central Florida for carrying guns, selling drugs, carjacking, armed robbery, etc and it hardly makes the news anymore. But let Granny forget that she has a little .32 pistol in her purse and suddenly it's a headline news story. ***.
