Woman kills intruder, wounds husband in home invasion

An east Harris County woman said she was protecting her family when she fatally shot an intruder holding them at gunpoint inside their apartment.

"I refuse to be a victim," said Angela Patterson, shaken but still defiant after the ordeal. "He put a gun in my face. If you're bold enough to do that, you're bold enough to shoot us."

Patterson and her husband were watching television about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday when a man stormed into the apartment in the 800 block of Audrey. Authorities identified the man as Charles Freeman, 21.

He was holding a semi-automatic pistol and wore all-black clothing with a bandana covering his face, authorities said.

"He came in and demanded money and the TV," said Harris County Sheriff's Lt. John Legg.

Patterson's husband told the intruder that he needed tools to remove the wall-mounted television.

"He said 'Give me the cash.' I said, 'We don't have any cash here,'" Jeffery Patterson said.

Freeman ordered the couple to take off their clothes and closely watched as Angela Patterson disrobed in the living room.

"He didn't pay attention to me so I charged at him," Jeffery Patterson said.

As the two men struggled, Angela Patterson ducked into their bedroom to retrieve a pistol.

"I got the gun and stepped back in and fired," she said.

Freeman was hit at least once and fell to the floor but an errant round struck her husband in the right arm, authorities said.

The intruder stumbled outside. He collapsed at the bottom of a flight of stairs leading to the family's apartment, authorities said.

Jeffery Patterson roused their two daughters, 8 and 13, who remained asleep during the incident. After locking the front door, the family moved back inside the apartment and called for help.

Jeffery Patterson was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital as Harris County Sheriff's investigators interviewed his wife.

He was back home on Thursday with his right arm wrapped in a thick bandage and still wearing the hospital's pullover smock.

"I thank her," Patterson said, motioning toward his wife, "and I thank the Lord that we're still here."

Sheriff's officials said Freeman targeted Patterson's family after noticing the television set in the apartment while he was buying narcotics in the area.

Detectives are still questioning a woman seen with Freeman earlier that night and later found waiting in a car nearby.

The fatal shooting will be referred to a Harris County grand jury, authorities said.

Was it clear that it was her shot that wounded hubby and not the former bad guy's? In any case, score one for the good guys. No good guy fatalities and one less scumbag in the world. It's a shame that crimes happen but it's good to know that there are still people who are willing and able to stand up for themselves when they need to.

Sounds like she needs to go to the range more often.

Sounds to me like she did just fine. These situations are chaotic at best. I'd gladly take a stray round in the arm to avoid my wife and daughters being raped or worse.

She did very well. Even if you wound an innocent in the process of dealing with a threat, that is acceptable. After all, if you can eliminate the threat, you can call for medical help. If you are timid and the threat wins, do you think HE will summon medical help for any wounds HE caused?

Deal with the threat first THEN worry about everything else once the threat is eliminated.

I'm not saying that one should be careless in the application of deadly force, only pointing out that until the threat is ended, ending the threat is the primary concern.

I think that she did well considering that the two men were in the middle of a struggle. The husband tried to do what he could even though his firearm was NOT on him or on a table next to him. It was not on the wife or by her table.

I wonder if the bad man broke through a locked door to get INTO their home. If it was locked... boom... he got in with a bad frame/door. If the door was NOT locked... my oh my.

I bet that they will always check a front and/or back door along with putting something in front of the door when they are home. Maybe they did NOT have a loving/nice yet well trained German Shepherd dog (What I had - a full blooded G.S., a GS MIX, or a mutt.) because it was NOT allowed where they lived. I bet that the Dad and/or Mom will pack a firearm on them when they are HOME. If not on them... on a table close to where they are sitting or in the same room with them.

Things moved quickly... I think that she did OK and I would not be so quick to JUDGE that lady.

She may go to the range often and even if she did not... maybe she USED to go often. At least, she knew how the firearm operated, how to USE IT, located it quickly and they had one in the HOME to use.

The lady was not raped/killed, the children were not raped/killed and the husband was wounded but is ALIVE. They were not kidnapped either... left for dead like trash to be picked up by the bad man.

Respectfully yours,

PS: I had trouble getting back to this board when I wanted to post this. It is working now. Thank you!

I'd say she did just fine.

Sucks for the hubby, but a GSW to the R. UE is better than DOA, which is probably what the assailant would have left him as.

It does make a case for laser sights on HD handguns - in high stress situations, having a laser sight can make a big difference in accuracy.

I say Great Job! Anyone who says "she needs to go to the range more often" or something similar has never been in a gun fight. If you had you would realize how well she did and wouldn't say a word.
More than likely she saved all their lives that night.

If you are confronted by a mugger or robber, the best thing to do is to give them what they want?
But what if you don't have what they want? These days, most of us don't carry cash. Glad they're both alright.

I did get held up at work. Had no $$$ or anything valuable and an empty wallet (life story). I pleaded. They took my wallet that did have credit cards.
Since then I always have some cash on board in case. For a while I carried a wallet with $50 in back pocket. These bandits are desperate and nervous. Give them what they want ...and fast. Don't hesitate.

A couple, friends of my brother, were on their way to band practice when they were set upon by a carjacker who killed them for $11.00 and their car. I knew them from a 4th of July picknick and they did not seem to be the kind to put up a fight.

A home invader (Fields) who was seeking drugs tied up another couple, then beat them to death with a baseball bat.

Down in Knoxville, carjackers set upon another couple, raped and murdered the boyfriend and kept the girl hostage for two days, raping and then murdering her.

I assume that anyone trying to force me to their will, is as likely as not to kill me if I submit. The HCI advice to yield and hope for the best is BS. Gary Kleck, Don Kates and John Lott are right: "victims" who resist are more often better off.

Don't expect to come out of a defensive fight unscathed. That unintended wound to the arm from "friendly fire" was better than death. Expect to be bloodied, just dont yield.

I gotta say it: IDIOTS!"

Hey DiHappy----------------maybe you need to practice youre reading skills:

"The intruder stumbled outside. He collapsed at the bottom of a flight of stairs leading to the family's apartment, authorities said."

Maybe he went out through the front door, hence their need to now lock it....AGAIN??!!

Give em a break.

When I take walks around my suburban neighborhood in the evening, I always wonder why so many people never close their curtains. I see many big screen TVs through those windows.

Lets see,

3 folks, enclosed space, fighting like fury, adrenaline and fear BG down and one minor collateral injury.

Seems to me she did better than most SWAT teams would....

Strong work by the wife. While their preparation may have been poor, they both stayed in the fight.
Bravo!

Nothing short of "force-on-force" training with Simunitions can even hope to duplicate this.

The husband will live, the robber will never trouble anyone again. Everything turned out well in the end. :)

Altho I would like to think that we'd never let that sort of thing come to pass due to lack of prep, I can only hope my wife and I do as well in the end.

I've got no immediate quarrel with the actions or outcome, and armchair nit-picking has little profit.

I think she did fine, based on the limited info we have available.

She had the right mindset to prevail and did what she had to do.

I'm sure she would have preferred not to wound her husband, but it sounds like she had no choice but to risk it.

Short of putting her through intensive "force on force" training, I don't know that any additional range time would have helped.
