I've been shot at while at a rural shooting spot north of Phoenix in the 90's. We've also had a few guys at our deer lease down outside of Giddings Texas fire several shots up in the air and in our general direction to scare us off while they were on our land. The idea that you 'may' get into a running gunfight with half a dozen armed meth-heads and actually 'need' a high capacity semi-auto while out in the boonies seems pretty far-fetched.
Then when we were moving from California to Arizona my wife was following me in a separate vehicle and we driving through a rural area when my wife had a carload of guys who she believes were drunk force her car off to the side of the road. I saw what was happening, I pulled over too and ran back there with my pistol and once they saw me coming they took off swerving their car at me like they were going to run me over.
Then when we lived outside of Sierra Vista Arizona down near the Mexican border we'd often see illegals passing our end of the street and a couple times we saw a man armed with a rifle leading the group.
So not all that far fetched at all to have a confrontation out in a really rural area with armed criminals. There's a certain breed of criminal that prefers rural locations simply because the response time from police is going to be longer than it would be in the suburbs where the police station is right down the street or because that's where they're from.
However I never mentioned anything about there being 6 of them.
Do I think I'm going to end up in some sort of End of Watch shootout every time I go hog hunting or go hiking with my wife? Do I even believe that it's likely at all? No, but I do like being a little more prepared than I have been in the past.
