So I found a well used Glock 19 yesterday for $350. The slide shows a lot of wear all over, however the frame is scuff free. This is a second generation gun with the Austrian proof marks and such. The serial number starts with DN, and according to TOP GLOCK's Glock dating, this gun was made in March of 1988.

The store rep. said this was a T&E gun for some PD's back in the early 1990s. Since then it was a issued gun for a detective who bought it when his dept. jumped on the .40S&W band wagon.

I plan to disassemble the gun next week to inspect the internal parts for wear. How can I tell if this gun needs the "upgrade"? This gun has a lot of appeal to me for man reasons. I dig the second generation Glocks, along the proof marks, and the wear gives the gun some serious character.

I have one like that. Mine was made in 1989 if I'm not mistaken. Lots of holster wear, little wear on the frame. That's ok, I don't plan to sit there and look at it. It's not a pretty gun anyway. :D

The upgrade, if I'm not mistaken, has been done if there is a "+" stamped on the triggerbar as you're looking straight down on the field stripped frame. The Complete Glock Referemce Giude explains it like this:

On some trigger bars you may notice an indentation in the middle of the cruciform. This means that it was upgraded with a larger hole for the coil spring.

Being a police gun, it's very possible that factory records exist to indicate whether this gun has received all the necessary upgrades. To my knowledge, Glock doesn't mark upgraded guns.

Your serial number is in the range of needing upgrades ( up to and including the prefix XK ) but they may have already been done...Glock would have this on record so just call them and give them the serial number and they will tell you. Or, you can find a local Glock armorer and they can look at it and tell you.

I purchased my Glock 19 in 1989 and its serial number starts with "DY..."

It is still in great shape and, no, it is not for sale :)

I had a MPDC G19 a few years ago that was crappy.
The NIB G19 we picked up last year is much better.

Sometimes used police guns are ok, but YMMV.

On the whole most Glocks in any shape prove to be reliable shooters.
$350 is a dandy price and I hope you enjoy your Glock.
