So I have a rem 700 in .22-250 varmint gun. I am interested in getting it rebarreled in a .308 with a slimmer profile barrel. How much should I expect to pay for the work only on this job.
Brownells "shop price survey" for chamber and fit barrel to action which does not include the cost of the barrel, action, polishing or bluing is $150-$250 but the best is to start calling gunsmiths that do this type of work and see how much they charge and wait time.
Our local gunsmith charges $100 to remove the old barrel and install the new one, $25 to check headspace and run the finish reamer for minor adjustment if necessary. And $125 to reblue barrel and action. Be sure to discuss iron sights with your smith if you want them. If not, headspace is the only issue. If headspace is a real problem, cutting the barrel and reaming the chamber can add another $75.
The action wrench and barrel vise often leave marks on the existing blue, and the new barrel rarely matches color with the existing receiver. You might want to give rebluing serious consideration.
Of course, this does not include the cost of the barrel. And the recoil lug if required. The whole job might cost more than half the cost of a brand new rifle.
