remove the thumb-break strap from my holster?

I use a leather holster for my N-frame revolver, but I never use the thumb-break strap. I'm going to my first regional competition soon and was told that if the holster has it, I have to use it.

So I can just cut it off? Will the holster still be "legal" for IDPA?

Yes! The rule requiring all retention devices to be used is no longer in the rulebook. Chop away.

It is specifically allowed to modify holsters to meet requirements and there is no rule against modifying them to suit yourself. There is no requirement to use a retention device except on police or military duty equipment.

There IS still a requirement that the holster cover the trigger guard. There are a lot of old style revolver holsters that do not. How about yours?

The holster only has to cover the trigger, not the whole trigger guard

The holster is fairly new and covers the trigger guard and probably a little more. It's a very secure holster. I figured I'd just get rid of the strap itself.

You got me there, waktaz. But I usually shoot a 1911 which has the trigger kind of in the back of the trigger guard so if the trigger guard ain't covered, neither is the trigger. Even bought revolver holsters that do, just out of habit.

Only reason I bring it up is because it came up in the SO class I attended this weekend. Probably only applies to some revolver or DA/SA holsters. I think I can see a bit behind the trigger on my SIG holster, but can't see the trigger.
