A ruger deerfield 99/44 converted to fire 45 win mag (nearly identical dimensions and operating pressures as 44mag, but in a rimless case) and use standard (non-rotary) detachable box magazines

The idea is that the deerfield conversion will be a working prototype with which to develop a proper loading for use in a carbine. The long term goal is to design and build my "ideal" setup for the hunting that I do.

Anyone else have a desire/need for such a setup?

What are the benefits of such a conversion? What magazines would you use and how will you retain them in the gun?

heard some folk actually was trying to convert an M1 Carbine for 45 WinMag...Le Mag was the name...some info on here about 'em but I haven't heard anything else.

not really because its not a common cartridge.

I concur. I like the Deerfield in .44 mag. The .44 is expensive enough, .45 win mag sounds much more expensive.

@Sam: Magazines are of my own make, as is the mag catch/release. Not simple, and not cheap, but I never intended the conversion to a marketable item, it's an exercise in design and function.
As far as the benifits...my gun is more accurate, but that's just a result of a better barrel, and tighter chamber. Though at the ranges it's intended for that improvment won't be noticable. The reality is that the conversion is time consuming and expensive and offers no legitimate advantages over the parent rifle.
The benifits of the final design...cheaper and less complicated magazines with more options in magazine capacity, an easier to manipulate magazine release, better fit and finish (and all that goes along with it), and the advantages of getting a gun fit specifically to you from custom gun maker (checkering and engraving are optional...lol).

@DBtanker: I had at first considered using the M1 carbine action, however, it simply wasn't designed to withstand the operating pressures I'm aiming for.

please note, the conversion is not the end goal here, it's just a step along the road. The end goal is a rifle design of my own, tailored to my specific needs.

@ RW dale, except for the advantages a rimless case has over a rimmed case. primarily in feeding and headspacing

Mine was a simple bolt action and I gave up trying to get it to feed and just used as a single shot

Don't expect your feeding and ejection to be all lollipops and sunshine because you got rid of a rim that WASN'T hampering function on the original parent platform

Before you proceed you need to understand that there us a FUNDAMENTAL flaw with the 45 win mag cartridge that because of the way it headspaces rimmed magnum cartridges don't suffer from.

Because of the mouth headspace you CANNOT put a heavy roll crimp on the loaded cartridges required for the powders that offer the best performance it ignite consistently. I worked around this by reaming my primer pockets slightly to accept large rifle primers. But even this didn't fully eliminate my large SD and ES numbers. I posted about this awhile back and you can read more about the same issue that the 450 bushmaster guys are having for the same reasons on their forums
