"As a result most are carried a bunch but shot very little."
Yeah, but unfortunately its not always easy to know which yours is. I bought a LE trade in gun Ruger P85 for $200 to serve as a dedicated car gun as i wont be terribly depressed if it ever gets stolen. I also bought a LE SW .357 mag revolver for a similar role. Like any gun though, new or used, i ran it through its paces and verified reliable function before putting into service.
I will say though that two of the best deals i ever got were LE trade ins. I live near a gun store that is primarily a supplier of LE and military but still open to the public so they have special LE pricing on glock, sig and springfield. Unfortunately they dont sell these new to public bc of a special pricing agreement with the manufacturer but they can sell floor models and used ones. They also get lots of LE confiscated weapons.
A while back some state agency that i never even knew carried guns traded in about 30 SW M&P .40s with night sights, box and paper work in like new condition. No holster wear what so ever. They were all sold for $300 each which of course i jumped on.
Another time a cop bought a Glock 21 SF and returned it the next day without ever firing it bc he realized it had an ambidextrous mag release and he worried he might accidently hit it with his seatbelt. I snagged that one for $400.
Other great deals i got there were a new sig556 swat within a month of release for $1400, confiscated Ruger Mark III for $170, MSAR E4 with original and stanag stock plus rails, spare bolt, firing pin, trigger group and clamp on front rail for $1000, eotech 512 used for $250, new Ruger LC9 for $330, etc.
