Wonder if there's a market for Trophy Squirrel hunts?.....P.T. Barnum was convinced those city types would part with their cash if the show was good enough.

Can't afford Africa?.....try the USA, affordable hunts for the tough economic times. Start your own squirrel trophy room with all the different colored sub species without breaking the bank.

If'n I wanted to hunt Squirrel of any size, I'd have to leave Wa. state for sure.

"Western gray, Douglas', red, and flying squirrels are all protected species in Washington (WAC 232-12-011)."

Oh yeah, I've been saving for years for a Northern Manitoba squirrel hunt - I hear they score 195+ up there (you measure their total teeth length in millimeters).

I've considered going on a Trophy Red Squirrel hunt, but don't know what caliber to take. Will I be undergunned with a .177? I was thinking about stepping up to .22 lr but was afraid of the recoil.

Rembrandt,

The sad reality is, many folks do not have areas to small game hunt in.
Perhaps there used to be some good areas, however due to urbanization, the prime squirrel land is now a Mall, or Box Store, or Developement for new homes.

Dead serious, one of the neat places I used to quail hunt, is now where the dairy section is in a Wal-Mart Super Store.
I have felled many a dove, standing where the garden center area is...

A neat little pond with a creek was up near where the gas station is located.
"Fill 'er up with bream please...".

Another sad reality is, many folks are not being raised with firearms, much less hunting in the home.

I will give single moms a huge bit of credit, as I know of a lot of single moms, that do an excellent job of doing things for kids, that is normally considered the role of a dad, or another adult male.

Even the single ladies, with nieces and nephews do this.

So yes, if a area is prime with squirrels, and set up correctly, and marketed to those folks with a desire to learn, willing, and really want it, I sure do see a market for such a enterprise!

I am thinking of kids, single moms, single ladies with nieces, nephews, plus elderly, that would like to take out grand kids, and physically limited persons.

A person in a wheelchair or some other limitation , has a right to pop squirrels, especially if wanting to pass forward to a kid, grand kid, niece, nephew, and the like.

Another group, would be Cancer Survivors. Men, Women and Kids.

I am serious, you get a group of breast cancer survivors lined up, and you will have some really appreciative ladies.
These same gals go spend time on a ranch doing ranch stuff and then taking a day to a 3 day trip via horseback.

Canoe trips, hiking, fly fishing, etc.

Ditto for guys, and of course kids.

Yeah, this might be a great: If you build it, they will buy it , marketing idea.

I would not be surprised if some private folks donated to assist with all this as well, with time, money and equipment.

*smile*

Big bucks for a hunting trip? It all depends on what's for lunch. :) Do you know how to fry squirrel over a campfire and make good biscuits?

Seriously, there might be a few of us who like to travel willing to go for a trip like that. It can't cost much more than duck hunting if you factor in the fees, ammo and gas for the boat and such.

I have an older S&W Model 17 with a 8.375" barrel and a 2x Burris on it that works well on small game. If I don't have to crawl through dense undergrowth I'd bring my Cooper too, otherwise I'm using a Mountie.

Maybe you could score the males by sac size. I've shot some old fox squirrels with some impressive bags.

Hope that is not too risque for this subforum.

We used to drive a bit over 500 miles to go to "Squirrel Camp". Group of us college boys, most overeducated buncha rednecks you have ever seen. Anyway, I dont think it was all about the squirrels, but set it up and I may bring the boys around.

bad_aim_billy, a .177 in a pellet gun is suffice to kill a squirrel (provided you have the right fps for the range). If you are worried about the recoil of a .22 LR then the .177 pellet gun will be your best bet.

I forgot, my father gave me his other favorite squirrel gun, a stainless K-frame with a 8.375" barrel chambered in .17 HMR.

Deer are too easy, squirrel is where it's at. :)

Trophy flying squirrel! Be a great mount... I believe you have to take them on the wing to count. .410 ? Squirrel dogs ?

Talking about the Wally World, in your dove field I got you beat , where we hunted rabbit there's a BASS PRO, whooda thunket?

Now are we talking about the common tree squirrel or the far more dangerous high bush tailed red Savannah squirrel(HBTRSS). Also known as fuzzy nutter death in many areas of the USA.

I have once and only once encountered a wounded and enraged HBTRSS. If it would have been for the brave actions of my PH, tracker, game scout, camera man (may he RIP), booking agent, driver, gunbearer, water boy and my leather underware I probably wouldn't be here writing this today.

The day had a sultry humid twinge as the burning orb which would make our day all the more miserable gave birth to a brilliant murderous red dawn. M'didiwaco my tracker had picked up a very large solitary spoor from the water hole at first light. The tracks showed this to be not just any solitary HBTRSS we were almost certain that it was the gnarled old dagga boy HBTRSS who had been on a killing spree the day before. His spoor was immediately recognizable by the huge diameter of his hind feet and the mangled twisted fore foot most likely the work of a HBTRSS poacher and his musket. The tusks of the HBTRSS are priceless for their well known aphrodisiac properties.

While all HBTRSS are known for their stealth when being tracked but this one had a sinister way in which he avoided being caught. His spoor was series of back trails and potential ambush sites. Everything about this old bulls movements showed that he was prepared for mortal battle right down to the scat piles he left complete with human remains, fingers and tongues mostly but the occasional undigested eye or a fully clothed torso was occasionally observed. His lack of complete digestion also proved that he was old and past his prime. That along with the worn ridges on his hind feet told us all that this was a rugged old warrior.

The tracking had been long and stressful the hunters guard and sharp senses started to diminish in the burning hours of the midday sun. Sweat dripped from their noses and soaked their shirts and jockey shorts. The lead tracker M'didiwaco was just getting ready to call it off when the slightest chattering sound was heard in the dense tree canopy above. With a rush came the horrific sound of crunching bones as Tad the camera man was struck full on by the enraged beast the HBTRSS hit him with his solid boss tossed him in air stuck him on a tusk and flung his lifeless body sickeningly with limbs flapping his prostrate body came down to earth making soggy thump as it came to rest.

With scant time to act I was just able to bring my UGhhhhhhh....

The end.

Sorry guys I couldn't help myself!;)

Just try that with an Arkansas Squirrel and you will be running home and hiding under the bed. LOL!!!

You guys are hilarious. Loved the fact that that bad_aim_billy finally admitted that he may or may not be able to tolerate a .22 LR's recoil. I know 15 ft-lbs of felt recoil is entering the range of unmanageability for most, but the 0.2 ft-lbs that the .22 produces really put a pounding on some of our shoulders.

You guys are nuts. And it is not even Friday night or a full moon, why all the loonieness? I propose it is the fact that we are talking about squirrel hunting. There is something about small game hunting that brings out the inner child in us. Not too mention it is affordable, abundant and challenging usually as well.

Would this be too long for a signature?

H&H.....hope to have the courage and be worthy enough to hunt one of those beasts....terrifying, absolutely terrifying. A kill or be killed hunt.....what hunting use to be.

Steroid Squirrel?.....or too many (GMO) genetically modified organic nuts?
