Contemplating selling my first rifle and handgun along with a bunch of other safe queens.

The rifle is a Romanian SAR-1 AK. Paid $300 for it and 1 mag back in 2005. Ended up threading the barrel for a slant brake, and added a Tapco G2 trigger to. It shoots minute of torso at 100 yards so it’s not a tack driver by any means. I haven’t shot this thing in 5 or 6 years it just collects dust in my safe. The only guns I use any more are the ones I rotate for CCW, the ones I use for IDPA (SSP, CDP & SSR divisions) , Bullseye (22LR League) and occasionally a few times a year I shoot NRA/CMP High Power rifle with an AR15 or M1 Garand. The pistol was the first handgun I bought too. It is a Springfield XD 45 Service that I bought brand new in 2006. All it does is stayed locked in a quick access gun box in the nightstand. Never gets shot because it is expensive to feed compared to 9mm and doesn’t fit my hand as well as my M&P.

Anyways anyone else thought of selling your firsts before? Only reason I am thinking about it is because I have $10,000 in medical bills accumulated from my wife being on hospital bed rest for 7 weeks this summer before giving birth and then the baby was in the NICU for 10 days (They are both home now and the baby is almost 2 months old and is doing great btw).

What would you do?

Sell

The market is a little depressed compared to 8 months ago, but I would sell it to pay the bills. One of the first handguns I bought when getting back into handguns in the late 80s was a S&W 3913. It was perfect for what we needed at the time, and a good gun for the wife. She never uses it anymore, and it's probably the only gun we have with the upside down safety. I've been thinking of putting it up for sale.

Glad to hear the wife and little one are on the mend.

The first gun I ever owned was (and is) a Mossberg 500 12 gauge. It is strictly utilitarian, and neither my wife nor I attach much sentimental value to "things." So I would sell it should the need arise, or I found I no longer used it (it still gets regular use), or give it away to someone who needed it more than I, and wouldn't think twice about it. So yes, I would sell my first gun.

Sorry for the medical bills, but glad to hear mother and baby are doing well.

I wouldn't sell mine. Mine were gifts and have become heirlooms already, my girls would prolly put me in the nastiest nursing home they could find if I sold the first gun they shot, but in your case it's probably the right thing to do.

Never. My Remington .35 Rem, bought in 1977 for $95, ($375 in 2014 dollars) will never be sold. My oldest grandson gets it when I die.

Hope he has to wait awhile. :)

I voted no that I wouldn't sell, but a high pile of medical bills can make one think otherwise.

On the other hand, I got stuck with a big medical bill years ago and made sure to send in what I could afford every month for three years. It didn't prevent collection agencies from calling me, but I did pay off that debt and it kept my credit clean.

No.
I did years ago.

And have regretted it even since.

It was a Winchester Model 47 .22 my folks bought me when I was 7 or 8 years old in the mid 1950's.

Then, I sold my first handgun, a very early black-eagle Ruger standard.
With I had that one back too!

The first gun I ever owned was a Winchester 190, and it's long gone. It was sold to me by my stepfather, then returned by me to his son when he died, in 1986.

I replaced it with a Ruger 10/22, which has not appreciated any in value enough to consider it something to sell.

My first handgun, a Taurus M66, was purchased the day I turned 21, in 1987. Like the Ruger, it would never fetch enough to get me out of a jam I could not get out of otherwise. And, I would resist getting rid of it for sentimental reasons as well.

I couldn't as it was stolen from my car in 1969. Bought a replacement and many others after it thru the years. Have always been in Acquisition mode not selling mode...

My first gun was a three-line rifle which I sold to fund a Simonov carbine.

I don't regret it. Do whacha gotta do says me.

My first was a single shot 20ga. I still have it, plan on passing it down to future kids but it's nothing I would lose sleep over selling if I had to.

I voted no. Mine has too much sentimental value. It was my old man's first gun and he passed it down to me. It's a Stevens .22. Honestly, even if for some reason I wanted to sell it, I doubt it's worth more than $75 - $100 and I wouldn't be surprised if it was worth less. Don't get me wrong, it's in good shape and still shoots great, I just can't imagine it being worth too much.

there's nothing really sentimental about your first gun, unless it also happens to be a family heirloom or something or your dad gave it to you before he passed away or something

usually, your first gun just means you were new to guns, had no idea what was a good gun and what was not, or what you really liked doing with guns, and so you picked something based on looks or some gun shop commando's recommendation. and later, you discover that guy didn't know what he was talking about, and there's a whole world of better options. and eventually, the first gun sits in the safe and hasn't been fired in years.

to me, uncluttering my house is worth more than a gun i never use. and if i had medical bills, it would definitely be gone. (unless it was my ONLY gun)

I did sell all mine to settle a divorce. Yours is a much more joyful reason. You will build a bigger collection and still have a family . Good luck and god bless.

As a last resort yes I figure just about anyone would I'm in that camp if I needed to pay some bills then yeah I would

My first gun is the 1952 Remington Model 514 single shot .22 rifle that my oldest brother handed down to me for Xmas when I was around 10. Nope, ain't gonna sell that one! In fact, I just refinished the stock last year and it came out awesome. Now I'd like to have the metal parts all reblued. Still one of my most beloved guns.

I gave my first gun to my son. I guess now he won't sell it because it's a family heirloom.

I probably could have sold it at some point over the years, now I'm pretty happy that it's still in the family. He will make his decision on this at some point in time

+1

I definitely agree with Taliv, especially about my first firearms purchase (a Benelli Nova that I now wish had been a Browning BPS). My second one (a Browning Citori), though, would be harder for me to part with, since I shoot it the more frequently than my other firearms.

Would I? No, but to each their own. My first gun was a then used Remington 22LR Model 510P given to me in 1958 (I was 8 years old) by a friend of my uncle. Considering I am 64 I have had it awhile. :)

However, to each their own. I can't tell someone else to sell or keep a gun, their call not mine.
