Would you share ammo if SHTF?

all my ammo fell overboard during a tragic boating accident. I have a brick of 22lr though,.

my only shtf rifles are bushmaster and rra ar15 w/ lmt sopmod stock.

have 15magazines loaded up with all sorts of stuff ready for war. it will be a pain to reload them all. I have over 5k in .223/5.56

A friend of mine and myself loan ammo back and forth when one is low to make sure we each have a good amount at each house at all times.

A minimum of 1000 rounds....everyone here seems to think they are going to kill a minimum of 9 to 10 trained and equipped soldiers with automatic weapons (and perhaps body armor) while hiding behind vinyl siding, plywood, and sheet rock. Chances are you'd be lucky to shoot 10 rounds before you were annihilated.

I'm not sure what your level of training is, but that is exactly the idea behind guerilla tactics. At its very basic level, guerilla style fighting is a shoot and move tactic, with the participants hopefully living to fight another day. It's how we won the revolutionary war and is how the Iraqi insurgency has held out for so long.

Oh yeah, quit taking this so seriously. I read the OP as more of a fun question than the opening of a serious dialogue on a real-world scenario.

I would share ammo if it was to my benefit. I'd sell or barter some if my supply was judged sufficient.

Let's Clarify

I think we need to clarify what type of SHTF situation it is. For example:

Red Dawn Sytle: I would hope in this situation we don't have a bunch of individuals running around trying to take on an army. Hopefully, we would organize ourselves into fire team, squads, platoons, etc. In that situation, sharring ammo is a must. What could is it to have a fire team of 5 guys, when only 1 of you has ammo?

Revolution: Again, are we long rangers running around fighting the Govt? Or organized Miltias?

National Disaster: Think Katrina on a national scale. In this case, it would be more of every man for himself. Moreover, you are probably hunkered down waiting this out. Not involved in constant gun battles. Therefore, NO - i would not share ammo, but i would also say that a box of 100 rnds, could last me throughout the disaster, unless i was being constantly attacked by zombies.

And, as another poster commented - i would trade. If i needed some water, food, smokes, etc. Ammo may become a valuable currency.

i have about 1500 rounds each of .223, 7.62x39, and .308/7.62x51.

also have about 1000 each of 9mm, .45acp, .357, .38 special, .44 mag, plus 300 each of 12 and 20 gauge.

if it was somebody i knew i'd share/trade ammo, but i would keep enough for myself.

also, if i survived/won the first firefight i'm pretty sure the loser/losers would have some ammo in one of the above calibers.:D

pharmer
I'd probably trade a half case of WWB 9mm for a 10 oz. gold ingot. On second thought 2 ingots. Joe

A lotta good that'll do ya. If you're gonna go the gold route, use small bullion coins or bars. Mexican pesos, krugs, Swiss credit bars, and the like.

Anybody got change of a $10,000 bill?

Besides, gold will be next to worthless anyhow except for the perception of the holder and the beholder. It does not have any intrinsic value.

I'd rather stock up on commodities like toilet paper, Clorox (TM), maybe fuel, other useful but neglected everyday items/commodities --even diapers, cigarettes, booze, batteries, Stuff you don't shoot but can trade for the needs you yourself forgot.

Like bandages, aspirin. Think: "Where will I get stuff I need every week but can't get from Wally Word anymore?"

That's real specie.

Kingpin008 and PotatoJudge are right about gold.

Unless you can cast bullets out of it.

Baby formula will be worth its weight in platinum.

Sure I will share my ammo! You come to my house with food and other supplies and help defend my home and I will share my ammo with you.

We all pretty much have the same opportunity to buy supplies and stockpile what we think is sufficient.

Gold is worthless

With the fall of our economy, gold will have NO VALUE at all. If there is no stock market, no economy and american greenbacks are worthless - gold will be just as worthless.

And as 230RN pointed out, you can't eat, drink or shoot gold. Why would anyone trade you for gold, what are they going to do with it?

In a survival situation, consumables will be the most value. Besides water and food, fuel of all kinds will be critical.

For everyone still talking about gold. Yes we know it's worthless. Look at history that is where you find the valuable stuff. Remember when spices and salt was used as currency? It's easy to make new currency. It is whatever everyone wants and needs at that time.

Assuming that either
A) you're at my house and we're shooting BGs
B) I'm at your house and we're shootin BGs

Sure, here's a box of ammo and a spare mag all ready to go. Make 'em count.

Random passerby: "Hey, can you spare a couple boxes of ammo?"
me: "Sure, you got any 'x'?"

In real SHTF scenario you would be dumb to work alone. It just won't happen. The minute you yourself start to fire upon the enemy they will have 10 guys at your back. They will have radio communication, etc. You need to get a small army.

I'm lucky in that have a huge family :) and most think the same as I do in terms of firearms and having ammo handy.

With a very limited number of people, yes.

----

All of you folks thinking that gold will magically become useless need to examine a history book or three. Fiat moneys come and go, but specie has been a relatively stable form of currency for millenia. Are there local minima and maxima? Yes. But in general, people need trade to survive, and there's a reason the concept of "money" was invented to replace "barter" for most transactions.

you can't eat, drink or shoot gold.

Silver bullets for werewolves, gold bullets for the more mundane variety of "animal".

A .45 Colt case stuffed with BP or a substitute, and a nice purty hand-cast gold slug can "buy" you a good supply of .223, 9mm, or any other ammo, if you know how to apply it. ;)

Mymonie:

Well, gold will have some value at first --as I said, in the eye of the holder and beholder.

You want some around as part of a diversified SHTF portfolio.

Just for those who would twirl their moustaches in glee at trading an ounce of gold for a case of baby formula.

And I would twirl my moustache, too.

The extra ammo is for when he decides he wants the baby formula back.

--------
(STAGE WHISPER): Funny thing about gold in today's so-called economy is that people say, "Well gold is up to $600 an ounce."

No. The dollar is down to 1/600th of an ounce of gold.

Thank you, Federal Reserve System. It's all promises, promises, now.

I wasn't one of the y2k stockpilers but I didn't fault those that did stockpile for the perceived threat that y2k had. Like ammo, food, water, etc is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. The very first people I would have shot if I were one of the stockpilers is the people who called me a nutjob and came around begging for stuff if the S did HTF.

I truly fear one day that ammo will be the only currency that has any value. I hope this thread provokes some gun owners to go out and buy some ammo for the "just in case" scenarios that have been mentioned here. Those of us who do prepare can't afford to prepare for everybody. I reload to stockpile more than I reload to shoot.
