Would you trade a Beretta 92fs for S&W 686-3?

Im so torn.

The 92 is italian made, original in box w/two mags. the smith is the 6in ss, has the box, pachmeyer grip, speed loader, 100 rounds to go with.

What should i do? Are they close in market value?

What??

This sounds like the American tradition of not owning more than one car at a time.

You can't own both?

The 686 with 6" bbl is a sweet pistol. You can hunt with that rig.

The Beretta 92 is nice, though I don't care for its factory trigger.

If I were FORCED to make a choice, I'd get the 686.

In reality, I was able to make the Beretta/XD choice and picked the XD.

Later, I was able to pick up the 686's brother, the 586-7 (blue+walnut).

I got tired of the idea that I had to give up one to have the other.

So I have both.

As much as I like Smith & Wesson revolvers, I say keep the Beretta.

I would trade for the S&W any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Sure the Beretta is a nice shooting gun and fun for the range but that's about it in my opinion. It's not even close to an ideal carry rig so that reason to keep it is out. The .357 is a better round than the 9mm, IMO. And from what I saw on Gunbroker they are about the same price with an edge toward the S&W. OTOH, you got 15 or 17 rounds versus 6 so at the range the Beretta is definitely more fun and the S&W is not exactly a good carry rig either. I guess it depends on what you are using it for.
If you are going to hold onto it for a while I think the S&W may be worth more in the future but I'm not sure.
In the end, it may just come down to what you want the gun for.

I traded a beretta once

And I finally (after 5 years of looking) bought one just like the one I had from a person that is a member of this forum
Thank you ! atomchaser

Oops I didn't read the post good enough :p , I would probably trade if I had another auto or you just want to try a revolver out. BTW can't believe I skipped the 686 part, its only one of S&W 's most popular revolvers.

Speaking purely in terms of monetary value, all aesthetics aside and assuming they are in equally good condition, the 686 should be worth more. Unless by original in box you meant NEW in the box, in which case the Beretta might be slightly more valuable. All in all though , it's probably fairly close. Like Gator said , the pre-MIM smiths are getting harder to find, and the Beretta is fairly common. Remember to use the sticky at the top of the revolver forum here to properly evaluate it, it's a useful tool. Even if you know it already, I find it helps me to remember what to look at.

Of course, speaking purely in terms of coolness factor .. no contest.

The dash-3 S&W 686 is a Pre-Lock revolver. I would make that trade in a New York minute.

The Italian made 92 has collectors value as well, it's the Beretta equivalent of pre lock, not quite pinned and recessed.

My personal opinion is offer cash for the 686 and keep the Beretta. Both are very fine handguns. If you can't have both, what do you want it for? If for personal defence, IDPA or IPSC, then keep the Beretta. If for hunting, long range or precision shooting, then trade for the S&W.

I'm a Beretta fan and a S&W fan. I'd work out a way to have both!

IMO, Italian-made 92s are more desirable because in my experience they are more accurate. I've owned four 92s and have fired many more, and the Italian ones have performed better.

That said, the 92 and 686 are both very common. One local shop has six (6) used S&W 686s in their display case. They have two used 92s, and three new ones.

IIWM, I'd keep the Italian 92, and save up for the $$ to buy another 686.

But I WOULD absolutely buy a 686 -- the 581/586/681/686 line of S&W revolvers are inherently accurate, well-made handguns.
