WWII battle rifle countdown

If I were fighting, the Enfield. Accuracy combined with massive magazine capacity. On the battlefield most of us aren't snipers, we're trying to survive.

And I've hunted, and will hunt, with an unmodified 1952 model.

M1 garand first. Second the Japanese arisaka. It is near half the weight of the others and has the best sight picture of any rifle I've ever seen

Kar98 is a really slick bolt gun. I like my Kar98K BETTER than my 1903A3.

Now that got my attention. I would have agreed in the past, but I have trouble with the sights on the K98 now. However the peep sights on the 03A3 still work for me.

Well, I can tell you what I have:

Garand
Mauser K98
Lee Enflield SMLE
Lee Enfield (Savage)
French MAS 36 (some did see service, however briefly)
Arisaka Type 99
Carcano
Steyr M95 (mostly backline use)
Mosin Nagant 91/30
Mosin Nagant M44
VZ24

1. M1 Garand
2. M1 Garand
3. M1 Garand

"The greatest battle implement ever devised."
-- General George S. Patton, Jr.

What more should I say?

Oh yeah,
4. M1 Carbine
5. Springfield '03

Interesting that it took that long to make the thread. Why such a bad rep compared to western counterparts?

Yup, difficult to understand as the Arisaka action is one of the very strongest. Maybe it's also confusion with some of the last ditch rifles.

i think they are less availible especially the ammo and in some point of their life they made some crap ones

I found that article, it was about the bolt action rifles of WWII. At the top as most accurate and ergonomic was the U.S 03 Springfield, followed very closely by the British Lee Enfield for it's smoother action and larger magazine and second in accuracy. Most of the other 5 or so rifles were inferior and pretty much even except the Mauser 98 was dead last in accuracy. The Mosin was fed old surplus ammo or it may have been a closer third.

i havent shot my enfield yet but i can vouch for the mosin having better accuracy over the mauser, although with the mauser the ammo made a difference, with romanian shooting much more poorly than yugo.

Oh how I crave a G43...

The Japanese Arisakas are some of my favorite shooters. (When I can find an afford the ammo. Note to me- get the dies and start reloading for them.:banghead:)

Others, not yet listed
Austrian 1895 Stutzen
Italian M38 Carcano
1941 Johnson -another one that I crave
Swede Ag-42 -another one of my favorite shooters

Wyman

In decending order from most favorite to least favorite:
mauser any make.
mosin
enfield
k31
m1 carbine
m1 garand
springfield
g43

I have played with all the WW-II veteran uncles rifles except a Garrand. I like them all and have a few project rifles based on battle rifle actions (P1917-06 & Arisaka 99 7.7). The only one I own is Pops bring back Arisaka hand me down.

At first I thought it was junk(y) as it was rusty and dirty and funny looking with teh big knob out back, etc. Screws were buggered where his dad had tried to dissemble, etc. I finally got it all working and clean - along the way I became quite impressed with the engineering. Even the last ditch rifles are well built - just rough as they didn't waste a bit of work on what was not important.

Today I just brought home a lonely Arisaka 7.7 sporter that had been collecting dust in the back of the gun shop for 5 years at least. I cleaned and oiled 'er up and it looks like a nice shooter - we'll see? It needs a scope (no irons) and I don't trust the base that's on there (only two screws), so we don't know? But if it's anything like Pops bring back - it'll be a hell of a gun.

His old beater bring back is 1 1/2" groups with Kinematics Research 174 grain ammo. Who would have guessed I'd fall for a Japanese rifle? Seems to have me under their spell :)

Favorite is the Garand, then next two

Wow when I first decided to start a ww2 collection, I had a mental list of everything I needed to look for, and roadkill has just presented my mental list in picture format.
Aside from the Japanese and American offerings I'm getting close.

Thanks for the kind words - keeping with the WWII battle rifle intent -here is the same stuff just different photos
