I loaded some .38 , 158 gr. , RNFP bullets tonight . I bought them around Christmas when Cabela's had them on sale . I think they are nice plated bullets . I hope they shoot good .

I started with 3.5 gr. Bullseye and went up to 4.0 gr. in 1 gr. increments . Do y'all have a pet load for that bullet and caliber ? I was second guessing my powder and thinking I should have used Trail Boss .

I have loaded a lot of AA#2 under 158 grain pills in .38 special, including 158 grain SWC's from Xtreme. A fast powder like Bullseye (or AA2 or W231 or whatever) works great with a 158 grain 38 special at moderate velocities. That's a classic combo, and no reason to second guess it for an instant. Save that Trail Boss for the HUGE cases! ;)

Note that I'm expressing no opinion on charge weight. No clue whether that's within published data.

In 38 Spl the max load of Bullseye with a 158 LSWC is 3.5 grains. I had good accuracy in my 38 Spl's with 3.8 grains and Rainier 158 FP. I have not tried those X-Treme bullets yet. I have had great results with other offerings of theirs though. I especially like the 123 Grain 30 cal heavy plated for my 7.62X39 loads

I load 158gr Xtreme semi wadcutters with 3.5gr of TiteGroup for a nice plinking load to shoot through my model 64 and pre model 10. I'll sometimes drop it down to 3.2gr for a light load to shoot in my J frame.

No TB for std .38, no need. 6.0 of HS-6 is a perfect plinking load. Very accurate and light.

WST, Competition, and Clays also work well with the X-Treme 158 Gr SWC. It just shoots well.

I am relatively new to loading 158 gr. bullets as I have always loaded 125's in 38 and .357 cases.
Bought 1000 158 gr. Extreme RNFP bullets and am currently loading using 4.8 gr. Unique just because I have a lot of it..
So far they have been working well in my short and long barreled revolvers.
38's are nice because there is a very wide variety of powders to choose from.
YMMV.

I just use something fast, Win231/HP-38, Bullseye, Titegroup, etc. I really like Win231 for a good, accurate load in .38/.357 with those types of bullets. FWIW, I prefer the RMR plated bullets for this caliber, I've found them more accurate out of my revolvers. YMMV.

I am cleaning some 9mm brass now , I might load that tomorrow with some X-treme 124 gr. RN bullets . I have some HS-6 and Universal powder .

I am going to try them next time , I got the E-treme .38 158 gr. for $42 and the 9mm 124 gr. for $35 and free shipping . I thought that was a pretty good price for 500 rds. and they look like a good plated bullet , I will see how they shoot . I had free brass so if my figures are right I loaded the .38 for $3.50 / 50 rds. , using 3.8 gr. of Bullseye and CCI SPP ,but I am not the best at math .

I haven't loaded in a while because of my rotor cuff operation and I sure was rusty . I had to work on my powder measurer , I had it set up wrong . I had to mess with my Tumbler , it wasn't tracking straight . I had to figure out what dies I had in my turret , I had switch out the Lee expander die for a Lyman M die the last time I loaded some lead SWC and switched the Lee factory crimp die for a Redding profile crimp die . I changed the profile crimp die with Redding taper crimp die , although it says I could taper crimp with it . I had one of my dies in the wrong order , I don't know how or when I did that .

I have gone through a lot of Xtremes, but in .45ACP rather than .38. I like them a lot. For .38, my favorite loads for plated/coated/plain lead use Unique or Win231 (or HP-38). People at the range have been telling me how great Bullseye is; I guess I'll have to get some and try it out.

Rick,
those .38 bullets from Xtreme cost 8.4 cents a piece so loading a box of 50 would be more than $3.50. That's a good price though, I shoot them and like them alot. Wish I got in on the 15% off and free shipping during their black friday sale

Walkalong, can you elaborate why Trail Boss doesn't play well with plated? Stuck bullet in barrel?
Huge ES & SD numbers when you fire rounds with powder back vs powder forward, and in .32-20 it was especially bad, where it would go pop, then boom. One shot barely getting out of the barrel and the next one in the 800s.

4.1 Grs Trail Boss under a Ranier 100 Gr HP 99% load density. PB = Powder Back. PF = Powder Forward.

6" Model of 1905
6 shots PB PF
HI 814 842
LO 335 775
AVG 597 804
ES 479 67
SD 189 21

So, in a word, "erratic" results with plated and Trail Boss. Every time I used it with lead it did well to very well, and every time I usedit with plated it was poor to bad.

Thanks , you are right , I told you I was bad in math . I refigured and came up with $6.05 .

I shot my x-treme 158gr. reloads today out of my new to me model 15-3 . I was not pleased with the groups I got using Bullseye , 3.5 gr. to 4.0 gr. . I am going to reload these again and try it in another revolver that I shoot well . My best 5 shot group at 15 yds. from a rest was 2.25 inches . I wish that I would of had some factory ammo with me to compare it .

I don't like Xtreme's .357 158 gr rnfp plated, but I do like their 158 gr fp plated.

I have shot all xtreme bullets from 380 to 44mag and all reload data said to load them as you would a lead bullet not to exceed 1200 fps I have used several different powders and seem to have good luck with all of them. I buy from xtreme and save a lot of money and Rocky Mountain reload sell plated bullets as well I don't buy from berry they coast to much just my 2 cents worth good shooting to all be safe
