I've been considering getting an IWB holster for the big gun.

Part of me says I shouldn't waste the money since I'd never actually carry it that way -- and that may be the smart part.

Anyone CC an XD 45, or a similar Glock or other big, fat pistol that way?

I too carry an XD45. Mine's the compact - same as the service model, but smaller grip.

I used to carry with a Galco Skyops holster, but switched to a Comp-Tac MTAC. I like the Comp-Tac much more.

I should have written...

Mine is the 4" Service model with the full-size grip.

Thank you all. Anyone else, I'd appreciate whatever info you have.

From what I've seen here, it's all about the holster design.

I probably WILL skip the simple Bianchi I saw. Seems like it would be uncomfortable, and offer little control over the gun's position.

ArmedBear~ definitely skip on the Bianchi. I picked up one of those holsters for cheap and gave it to my friend to store his 1911 in. It's a really really light leather that folds after you draw the weapon. Check out www.crossbreedholsters.com or if you are really on a budget grab a Don Hume ...I think it's the 715-M. The subcompact model works fine for the XD45 as well. $25 or so.

Assuming that I'd just use my kydex belt holster for repeated drawing, why is it a problem that the Bianchi folds?

I may be missing something -- I'm probably not thinking about it well enough.

My real concern with the leather holsters is that they'd be uncomfortable to wear with the big gun, since they offer no structure, and no protection between the grip and body. But maybe there's more to it.

Thanks for all the good info!

As long as you're looking for a codpiece to mask a diminuitive condition why not trade your 4" service sized slide and barrel for my 5" Tactical slide and barrel.

Ladies will swoon, stricken by the vapors, some may faint dead away.

I carry a XD45 compact IWB at the small of the back (SOB). I use a Dakota Defender from K&D Holsters. It's a great holster if you don't mind the wait (3 to 4 months). A lot of people don't like to carry SOB and I understand their reasons, but that seemed like the best choice for me at the time. If I wanted to carry at 3 o'clock, I would have to buy a new wardrobe or loose weight. One options is really expensive and the other is not that easy (although I would be better off).

You don't want a holster that folds up because the need to re-holster a gun can be very important in any kind of emergency situation. You need to be able to draw AND reholster with one hand, without taking your eyes/attention off a person/animal/whatever got you to draw in the first place.

Second, as a safety issue, if your holster collapses you're pretty much going to have to get your support hand's fingers in there and hold it open so you can insert the muzzle of the gun -- which means you've got your fingers in front of the muzzle. And that's dumb. Or, you can do the wiggle and pry thing and try to use the muzzle of the gun to open the holster back up (against the tension of your belt). Now, though, you're not inserting the gun straight back into the holster -- you're sweeping your pelvis and legs while using the gun as a shoehorn. Also, very dumb.

Third, as a practical issue, if you holster your gun (lets say it's a nice fat XD, SIG, or maybe a Beretta 92) in a cheap flexy IWB holster and then cinch your belt tight to secure it...then draw the gun...and the holster collapses ... and your pants fall down...

A quality holster will be VERY hard to collapse. Many good IWBs even have a metal stiffening spline buried in the layers of leather so they won't let you down like this (though very well made holsters may not even need it). That's just the way good, professional quality gear is made.

And it's NOT the way the cheapy "leather sock" holsters are built. But that's why they're cheap.

My real concern with the leather holsters is that they'd be uncomfortable to wear with the big gun, since they offer no structure, and no protection between the grip and body. But maybe there's more to it.

A good leather holster is the exact opposite of what you've described. They are very substantial, offer rock-solid support, and will present a smooth(er), shielded side where they ride against your body.

(P.S. -- I don't carry an XD, but I do carry both a 1911 and a 4" S&W 629 IWB-style fairly regularly. (No, not at the same time.) It just isn't that big a deal.)

Indeed, though I'd rather do it with my XD and my hand off the safety, than with a Glock...:D

Really, a 4" 629? I've got one, but hadn't really considered IWB concealed carry. Maybe if I'm wearing a duster (but then I'd be obliged to wear a single action.)

Oh, I just meant the soft, thin, minimalist leather holsters like the Bianchi in the picture.

The pic is of my XD45 Service in a FIST #43. This holster allows for either IWB or OWB carry. I have used it to carry this XD for about two years and have had no problems. The XD is what it is but with just a little clothing care it is a fine, convenient, and comfortable CCW:)

XD 45 in a Crossbreed super tuck works just fine. It's a little thick for summer carry, but winter it works fine.

Although it isn't quite as large, I carry a SIG P228R in a Blackhawk leather IWB holster, and I can pull it off in the summer with proper shirt selection. Also, I'm only 5'6'' and 120 lbs. or so. Embrace billowy "hawaiian" style shirts, they are your friend.

I carried my XD45 in a desantis IWB. I carry my Glock 21 SF in either a Galco Summer Comfort IWB or a Blade-Tech Nano IWB.
I prefer IWB carry due to the edge on concealment, but I normally only carry large pistols.

I had a Blade Tech IWB for my xd-9 s.c. I didn't like it. I would like to find a comfortable one though. I hate to buy one then try it then maybe find out I don't like it. Wonder if there is a place you can rent holsters for a few days to try them out? haha

XD-45 would be fine for IWB, dependant on the quality of your holster and belt.

Blade Tech makes the best IWB holsters.

Unlike leather, kydex holsters don't "bleed" stain on your undershirt, don't collapse when the gun is drawn out, don't dry out and tear when they get old, don't stretch, and they cost half of what a decent leather holster costs.
