Today I finally fired two different pistols for the first time, though they were purchased some months apart: 1) A Ruger P345 that I bought more than a year ago (I know it sounds strange, but having moved a few times, started grad school, shuffled belongings around different cities in different states, this was the first time I fired it -- and I bought it last April 15 in El Paso). 2) The Springfield XD-45 I bought last week. I bought 100 rounds of Winchester white box .45 from Walmart (the clerk was *incensed* that as of Monday, that Walmart will join the gun-free ones), and fired 50 rounds through each. I know to some on this forum, 100 rounds is what you do before breakfast, but my callouses are just getting started, so bear with me.

Now, as to what went "wrong" (in the subject line), I want to be clear: both guns fed flawlessly, and I had no failures to fire. However, I wanted to fire with the magazine removed on the XD (the Ruger has a magazine disconnect), so see how the recoil differed with the resulting different weight distribution.

Upshot: it *felt* fine, but the brass failed to eject, leaving a smoking shell stovepiped in the ejection port. After the first one, I thought perhaps I had limpwristed, and after clearing it by racking the slide, I again loaded a single cartridge and released the magazine. I was careful to hold the gun firm, but the same thing happened. I experienced no other failures to eject from either gun, which was making me pretty happy, and I guess that's what I get for feeling smug.

Fluke? Something I should do differently when firing it with the magazine removed? Guesses? I appreciate anything you can suggest, particularly if you use language that a perpetual newbie can understand.

Cheers,

timothy

p.s. Was firing at one of the no-fee, tax-funded Pennsylvania State Game Lands ranges; a pleasant enough place, but there was not a single intact target frame -- looks like someone had played shotgun there and turned them all to (mostly) tinder; a couple that was there before I did had brought their own frame, and I guess that's what I'll do when next I visit. Tragedy of the commons :(

I don't think I saw you mention - did you clean the gun for the 1st time before your 1st trip to the range?

pre-shooting cleaning

Shipwreck:

Just used patches down the barrels to make sure there was no excess grease (really, the patches came out quite clean) followed by a tiny bit of lubricant (Remington brand, I think) and another run of patches.

Wow! That's not been my experience shooting my XD-45. In fact, after a disassembly and inspection prior to first firing mine, I have now shot several hundred rounds thru mine without a single malf. I haven't even lubed mine yet.

Perhaps tomorrow morning I will have time to try your scenario (no mag ~ one chambered round) and see if I experience the same occurrence.

If your malf can be easily repeated it should happen with mine as well since I have not yet cleaned mine at all.

I've got some 230-gr WWB FMJ so ammo differences shouldn't be a problem.

I hope that your FTE was just a temporary and short-lived occurrence. Please keep trying the same single-shot experiment, as I am very interested if it continues.

You should have cleaned the rails on the frame and slide and re-oiled.

Some guns have packing grease on certain parts - Both of my HK USPs had this on them. You really need to clean this.

Rails could have been dry and/or gooked up with something. I ALWAYS completely clean a gun and reoil when I buy one new.

From what I have read this is common with other makes and models as well. With no magazine inserted there is no upward pressure when the case comes back. I don't believe it is a "problem" so much as just what happens when you shoot some autos with no mag inserted.

TexAg +1 - on the XD, not only do you have no upward pressure on the fired case without a magazine in the gun, you also have slight downward pressure on the fired case from the loaded-chamber indicator. I've noticed that, when clearing my XD9 Tactical, live rounds and snap-caps tend to drop down out of the magazine well unless the slide is racked quite briskly.

I DIDNT clean my XD 45acp before I shot it for the first time, (should have) but hey I guess im in the clear now that ive had over 1000 rounds through it without a hickup or a burp:) Just a wam bam thank you mam every time I pull the trigger...

I didn't clean my XD45ACP Tactical before I shot with it the first time. No problem's but I think new gun's should be cleaned & oiled before use. It seem's to make them function more smoothly.

Not an issue here. I ran through a whole mag dropping the mag after each round was loaded. I had no problem. As a matter of fact, 600+rds not one issue. My XD will eat just about anything, Wolf, WWB, SWC, JHP and LRN
