Consistent! Slow...but consistent.:) Is that what you're meaning with the post? Most ball is loaded around 830-850 from 5" barrel for what it's worth. I'd be bumping that load up a bit if it were me.

Just putting results out there. I have googled certain powders in certain calibers to see what other people were getting and often times would find information in the archives here.

Also seeing if anyone else might have had similar data. I really want to get around 800 FPS but according to hodgdon 4.8 gns is max but I've seen other people listing 5-5.1 as max in their manuals. I will say that from other results I have gotten out of my XD I think it may have a slower shooting barrel.

I have trouble understanding working up a load when by the time you see pressure signs the load is already well over pressure.

Oh no im sorry. your post caught my eye as im loading some 185gr. horn. xtps and switched over to 185 haps. Going to save the xtps for a lil. melon shooting.) I been using rmr 230 rn match plate w/ my xds 3.3 . Anyhow these fellas have helped me out much! Loading for the J.R. carbine but been using both powder choices. (P.Pistol T.G. also Good #'s on the chrono you have out of the rnds. shot. I am always learning. John

Just picked up some Power Pistol myself today in hopes of getting to 850 fps but saving it for defense loads (not going to carry but like to be able to make some good rounds if needed).

Dbeam, nice info. If you dont mind, add your location.

I have some tg info for 230 extreme I could send if you like.

Very consistent loads though, did you weigh each charge?

No that was with the lee drum auto-drum. It probably just looks good due to the small sample (I fired 10 rounds with 5 of them being errors). here are some numbers with the same set up but xtreme regular plate 45 230 gn. Its all mixed brass so I don't know if that may be the cause of the big differences.

I would like to see that info for the xtremes if its not too much trouble to get, I think I'm going to keep using the rmr fmjs but it looks like they aren't too far apart on the bullet speeds.

Here are the numbers on the above set up but with 4.4 gns of titegroup out of an auto disc

Depending on who developed the load data, what is considered a 'maximum' sometimes is not due to reaching the pressure limit. If the velocity spreads start to get erratic...they'll stop playing with that particular powder and move on to another one. Some max out on the pressures and, of course, they stop there.

I think it was in the Speer book where they described how they developed the loads, and some were stopped when the accuracy started going away even though the pressures were well within the limits.

Other powders are nice and progressive in their pressure and velocity rise but get freaky once a certain point is reached, and they's stop there rather than risk someone getting into trouble getting close to the pressur max. There is NO reason to mess around with an inconsistent powder when there are many others available that are more predictable and stable.

Using 230gr winchester fmj I am above 800fps with Bluedot or Bullseye. With Barry's 185gr hollow base copper plated bullets I am above 850fps usually around 890fps. I just started working with the 185 Barry's, I don't know if I am going to continue using them. I will probably give the Barry's 230gr copper plated a try when my Winchesters run out. I bought 5000 Winchester 230gr fmj's about 15 years ago before all the copper plated bullets were popular. I am about out of the Winchesters.

I don't think my 1911's would cycle at 700 fps. I know my XDS wouldn't cycle reliably with loads that slow... but I am using different powders than you.

My Springfield 1911 Trophy Match, 5", seems happiest with Hornady HAP 200gr, Hodgdon TiteGroup 4.8gr.

My OAL is 1.238. Chrono says: 765.0 fps, 7.3 SD, producing, at 50 feet, a bench rest group of 0.75".

The Hornady 185gr XTP shoots best with TiteGroup 5.8gr 950.4fps, 22.10 SD, and a group of 0.80".

I prefer the 200 gr because the 185 is a bit snappy in my hand.

At max on hodgdons site 4.8 gn of titegroup would push a 230 GR. HDY FMJ FP (not exactly sure what bullet that it is) to 818 and 4.4 gns should be doing 744. I know you won't get exact results but I'm getting less velocity then their min at mid range. I do think my 5 inch XD may shoot slower then other guns. My average with WWB 230 is around 805 and around 815 with Speer Gold Dots 230. Perfecta 230 fmjs are averaging around 830.

RMR .45 230 RN Hardcore Match Bullets

I work for RMR. Was the original post for FMJ bullets or were they our Hardcore Match plated bullets? We do sell both but recommend the Hardcore Match as an inexpensive yet accurate bullet.

It was for the FMJs RMR sales. I was using xtreme plated before but the considering your FMJs can still be loaded much cheaper then what I buy loaded ammo for even though higher then the plated I would used them and not have to worry about the crimp as much. I think they feed through by hornaday bullet feeder a little better too and if they had to be used defensively I think they would be better then plated although I'm not sure about that. Your FMJs remind me of Perfectas is there any connection there?

Tight Group is a very dense and fast burning powder. Supposed to be position insensitive though not completely in my experience. Good for light target loads at modest velocities.

If you want service level loads at 850fps with 230gr FMJ in the .45 you'll need to use a slower powder like Unique, AA5, or Universal.

4.76-4.77 gns of titegroup, rmr fmj 230 gn, 1.25 oal
Shot 13 rounds all where errors but 4, my chronograph hates a sunny day.
