I've read that the .40 mags will hold more than 10 rounds of 9mm. Is this so? Is it completely reliable?

I just bought one of the XD-40s with a SS slide. Haven't shot it, yet. It has a 4" barrel. I'm thinking of getting an XD with the 5" barrel. Does anyone have one of these?

Also, I read of some extractor breakage problems. Is this still a problem?

Does the finish on the black-finished slide hold up well? It looked parkerized.

Never thought I would get an XD, but handled one today and it felt solid and points better than a Glock for me.

Any comments or info would be appreciated.

"I've read that the .40 mags will hold more than 10 rounds of 9mm. Is this so? Is it completely reliable?"

Yes. With the XD40 mag in stock form, the slide of the XD9 will lock open with the last round still in the mag. To get the last round to feed without actuating the slide stop, the feed lips have to be bent inward slightly to keep the follower from raising too much. When the feed lips are adjusted, the XD40 mag MUST STILL operate in an XD40. From what I've read, bringing in the feed lips 0.020" will to the job but have yet to try it.

"Also, I read of some extractor breakage problems. Is this still a problem?"

From what I understand, this has been corrected. The extracter had been feefed up.

The 40 mags will hold 15 rounds of 9mm. The feeds lips will probably have to be adjusted in ever so slightly to ensure that the last round feeds properly.

The extractor is no longer an issue. On very early guns the extractor would fatigue and/or break. The piece was redesigned and is now completely reliable.

There has been an ejector issue for some that use outsourced hi-cap mags. Unless the top of the mag is properly shaped, and hard slap on the bottom of the mag can wedge the mag against the ejector and snap it off. You will not have that problem with the Springfield brand mags.

I have used 40 mags in my 92fs & in my USP 9. Works reliably in my 92fs & not as reliably in my USP 9. Comes down to testing. It took me almost 3500 rounds to discover the feeding problem :(

I said extractor, but meant ejector. I noticed the top of the mag almost touches the ejector. I mean, it is VERY close. You have to strain to see that there is a tiny gap between them. It looks like if the mag were slapped into the gun, it could hit it. That concerns me a bit.

The problem with the ejectors breaking had mostly to do with after market mags being used. The feedlip on that side was touching and breaking them when slamming the mag home. Take the slide off your gun put a mag in and push up on the bottom of the mag, if it touchs a few seconds with a file (or dremel, I prefer a file) will take it down enough....its no big deal. If it doesnt touch your good to go. I have 4 mags for my XD 357sig, 2 touched and 2 didnt. It took me a minute to file them down. as long as you can see daylight between the mag and ejector when pushing up on the mag your ok.

5" XD's in .40 seem to be around but SA's 800# has been
misleading {Lying} callers all year on the true availability date
of the 5" 9mm XD's.........
