Thinking about a polymer autoloader in my future. Getting a 45acp. I reload so the full supporting chamber of the XD is a plus and they are accurate but everything I hear about glock 45's is that they are amazingly accurate as well and indestructible. I can buy a Glock for $460 or an XD for $490, so price is not an issue. Both come with hard case and 2 extra clips yada yada yada. Now lets hear some opinions.

Thanks,
Matt

Grip angle and trigger will probably be the main differences, handle and dry fire both, shoot them if you can, and get whichever feels better to you.

My personal preference is the XD. I have owned both and still like the XD much better.

I have an XD45 Compact and a G30SF. I have to say that I like both but they each have their pros and cons. For instance many people have had to get new springs for their XD mags. I haven't but the Glock mags seem to be more durable.

The slide is easier to cycle by hand on the Glock than on the XD. While shooting both will shoot the brass out to the side. However, when cycling by hand to clear a round or malfunction the Glock will still spit that round out while with the XD the round barely leaves the chamber/magazine area. I've even had some round on the XD stay in the pistol.

I like the ambi mag release on the XD. For some reason my G30SF is hard to depress the mag release when shooting with my support hand. This could be thats it's still new with only 150 rounds through it though. I know it took awhile for the mag release to loosen up on the XD so I'm not too worried about it. I like how the mags fly out of the XD when the release is depressed. They're a little slower for the Glock but it's not an issue.

I have a newer XD so it has a good finish and has no rust problems. I think both pistols look good and like both of their finishes.

I like how the slide stop on the Glock is small and thing and has a raised ridge protecting it. The XD's slide stop is bigger and thicker and sticks out past the ridge on the frame. Because of this I have accidentally locked the slide back on partially full magazines twice in the last 550 round I've fired through it. That is a big no-no since if it happened at the range there's a very good chance that it will happen during a high stress self defense incident.

Now for triggers. I like how light the trigger is on the XD. I don't like the long trigger reset or over travel though. It also feels too mushy, not crisp. I love the short travel and reset of the Glock trigger. The Glocks trigger does feel a little heavier but then again I have not fired as many rounds through it yet so it is not completely broken in yet. The XDs trigger felt like it lightened up about 2 pounds after I hit the 400-500 round mark. Although the Glocks trigger is a little heavier feeling right now I also like how it feels crisper than the XD.

Both pistols have been very reliable for me with no feeding or ejecting issues for me. Both have also been very accurate for me, but I do shoot the G30SF more accurately at 25 yards than the XD. The sights aren't an issue since I put XS 24/7 Big Dots on both of them.

I have the same holster for both pistols. It's an AKJ Concealco (www.greatholsters.com) and both conceal very well on me. But in this department I have to give the edge to the Glock. It conceals better than the XD and feels much lighter. I don't have as much of the grip sticking out on the Glock as I do on the XD. An unloaded G30 is 5 ounces lighter than an unloaded XD45Compact.

As for the grip both feel good to me. I like them both but I can get a higher grip on the Glock. While shooting the Glock seemed to have a hair more recoil than the XD. That may be due to the XD being a little heavier. You had to be paying attention to really notice though as both pistols were very controllable. My wife felt the recoil on the XD was tolerable but hated it on the Glock. However she can't rack the slide on the XD but can on the G30SF. That's one of the reasons I bought her a G19 for an anniversary present this past week.

All in all I like both pistols and would not give either one up. The Glock 30SF is going to become my primary carry piece over the XD though. I'm just waiting to put some more rounds through it first and my HSTs to show up so I can run some through it first. Sorry about the long post but I wanted to do a good comparison from someone who owns both with the same sights and holster for each pistol. I hope this helps someone out there.

I was kindof disappointed in the first two posts, then I came to yours, remington79, Thank you for a great comparison that is what I am looking for. Keep it up everyone!

Thanks,
Matt

You really can't go really wrong with either XD or Glock.

It really comes down to preference. I would suggest renting/borrowing each and shooting enough rounds to see which one you prefer.

Since you reload, and if you handload lead bullets, take into consideration the barrel rifling.
Some will tell you that lead can or shouldn't be shot through polygonal rifling.
Some will say that some Glocks don't have polygonal rifling.
Some will say that none of them have polygonal rifling.

I'm just saying... take that into consideration.
Look into it, and make up your mind for yourself.

I did, and I ended up with the XD45, FWIW.

The XD has land and groove rifling and the 45 ACP Glocks have octagonal rifling. If you do reload and use lead you can get a land and groove rifled barrel from Lone Wolf for the Glocks. I don't reload yet but when I do I plan on using FMJs so the barrel isn't much of an issue for me.

I will be handloading lead i am sure and a lone wolf barrel will run me another 100 on top of that so its leaning toward the xd

I really like Glocks, but I think that it depends upon which guns you are considering.
I tried a G21 and found the handle just too fat for my average size hands.

The grip angle/size/feel are so much different I think it comes down to which one feels better to you. I have both and I don't think you can go wrong either way. I prefer the XD in .45 and the Glock in 9mm.

I have an XD45c and a Glock19 (I know... 9mm vs 45...). That being said, the two guns are almost identical in size. I REALLY like the grip angle of the XD. The natural point of the Glock in my hand is a bit nose high.
Reliability has not been an issue. Both guns are pushing about a thousand rounds each with no failures that I can recall.
Not sure about the mag springs, I have six for each gun so I s'pose I just have not worn one out yet.

The big differance is the grip safety. Holstering the XD is a bit "safer" than the Glock (in my opinion, for whatever that may be worth). I have heard too many horror tales of Glocks getting tangled with foreign objects such as shirt tales getting holstered. With the XD, as long as your not holding the grip safety the gun won't go bang. I use a belly band type holster, so this is VERY important to me.

As so far as the slide lock on the XD, mine has never caused me any issues.

Happy shopping, you can't really go wrong with either gun.:D

My advice is to see which fits better in your hand. I was all set up to buy a glock 26 until the guy at the store handed me a subcompact xd. The only thing is that glock has more accessories and holsters available.

I have the XD9mm and Glock 17. I have a medium sized hand and stand only 5'5" - I hope that information helps. The XD seems to fit better in my hand - more full and more stable and point well. The XD also, for me, has a more crisp trigger compared to the springy Glock trigger, which produces tighter groupings. At the range, somebody left me fire his XD9. Immediately I grouped well on the first try. The next day I bought one.

I have few different XD's and Glock 17 and 19 and I must say the xd's are more rugged and can take much more of a beating and just handle better and fit in the hand.

i own both xd service model .40 with over 14,000rds, as well as a glock 23. there is no gun that i feel more confident with, shoot better, and enjoy shooting more than my xd. it is my go every where do everything gun. i have ran it hard and abused the heck out if it and keep going and going.

glocks are great but me personally i prefer the xd.

Well because of the ability to shoot lead reloads without a barrel change, the ruggedness and the accuracy, I will probably end up going with an xd 45 with a 5" barrel. That being said, I am going to handle them and try to get to shoot both a glock and an xd to see what handles better. Thank you everyone who responded, I really appreciate it.

Matt

I had a Glock 36 and a Glock 30, but I did not care for the magazine base pad to frame junction on either, sold them; Glock should have just made the frame longer. The 30 was tolerable with the flush fitting 9 round magazine that did not offer a full grip.

I purchased the XD45 compact bi-tone and loved it, ended up getting another one in all black. The XD45 compact is my favorite "full size" pistol; I also really like the Glock 38 in 45 GAP, but the XD carries one more shot and I shoot it just as well. BTW: the XD grip safety is invisible when shooting.

A few years ago I had a Glock 21, the recail seemed a little on the harsh side so I sold it. Everything else was fine with the gun.

A couple months ago, I bought an XD .45 and love it, the recoil doesn't seem as harsh.

They are both fairly even, it just goes to personal preference.
